The renamon, as mentioned, stood aside, and let humans do the talking between themselves. Trying to not concentrate on the words much, or to look at Valus. Because just his image provoked her. Instead she concentrated on petting the little digimon in her hands. Modoki was safe with her... And she would make sure of that ... and crack some heads of those who don't believe it.
However, she did catch what the two boys were talking about, if only partially. And what the fox heard ... was not making her happy. No, not at all. In fact, quite the opposite. She expected them to pry out of the boy how to free Modoki and disable that chip inside her head that turned her against them last time...
But they did not talk about that. Ryusuke talked only about how he wanted to get home, and about how he wanted Valus to lead him there. About Modoki... he said they should just "agree to disagree". That almost made her fly off the handle, that sounded ... cynical. Know wrong being committed ... and not doing anything about it? Renee's grip around Modoki tightened a bit.
- Agree ... to disagree? - her voice fell, sounding low, as she made a step forward to the table. Her face expression was ... scary, to say the least. Like that time when she kicked Valus when on the ground, or when she was about to break Ryusuke's arm... Hinting something very heavily.
- No. Disable chip... Stop link... You will. - her words sounded like they would not accept a "No" for an answer. Because she won't. And anyone thinking she will would get swift and painful lesson... or at least this was what she intended to do... Putting the digimon on the ground, she flexed her wrists with audible bone gnash.
- Or else...

- ~ - ~ - ~ - ~ - ~ WON'T LET YOU SLIP THROUGH MY FINGERS
He hadn't lied? No, he really hadn't. Lying wasn't his thing...
But the assumption was there that he had. They treated him like scum, so did that mean he was scum after all? Again, he felt that desire to defy their expectations. To show that he wasn't the inferior creature they made him out to be. His recent defeats hardly enforced the idea that he was superior though... and neither did the fact that the other humans here were chosen, while he was not.
What the hell did it make him then? His mind was going back in circles - this was the same question that had been bugging him since that forsaken forest!
At least Shion didn't seem to loathe him so openly as the others. Yagami was the one speaking now; wasn't he always? But he was trying to negotiate some sort of compromise, it seemed. Just as he'd suspected, they wanted information, although there was no way to confirm if that'd been their goal right from the start or not. Despite being on the same team, Yagami and Renamon both seemed to have very different ideals. It made him question how exactly they worked together at all.
"... no! Renee, tha' goin' too far now..."
Ah. It seemed that they didn't always function... just like back outside the Factory. Valus' back was turned, but he heard the Renamon's voice, heard her bones crack in menacing fashion. Shion was the one standing closest to the stairs - standing right in front of him. She had a partner with her, but Yagami's partner was outside, and Modoki had a soft spot when it came to the vulpine which made her useless.
"You want to know how? I'm the wrong person to ask." he said, speaking slowly and quietly, and holding back his feelings of fear towards her. "Threaten me or beat me if you want. You'll learn nothing and Modoki will suffer." This time he had right on his side. He'd take Yagami's proffered olive branch if it got him far away from here and gave him another shot at things, and then he'd be the victim and not the villain if Renamon persisted.
"Shion." he spoke out. "I'll tell Shion everything I know." A mediator he could trust not to kill him once things were over... yes, he'd be honest with Shion. Selectively honest, perhaps. But secrets and prejudices were just gossip to her, like they were to Modoki.
"Can we all agree that she's trustworthy?"
It was a rhetorical question, of anything. Of course everyone knew the answer.

Ryusuke had seemed to come to an agreement, or was actively trying to offer a truce. She wouldn't have expected Valus to be murderous in his attempts to get away from his pursuers - but clearly they had met before, and not on good terms.
Those good terms were clearly illustrated when Renee spoke up in that cold voice again, flexing as if intending to intimidate Valus into doing what she wanted - her expression and body language promised harm. This wasn't going anywhere, and she heard a soft growl from BlackGabumon behind her - apparently he had decided that Renee might be a threat. A fight would attract attention, and waste time, and she didn't see the point.
"Wait - Valus probably doesn't know how to get rid of it!" she called out, playing alone - surely Shion would have been worried about actual bloodshed. Such violence, and how easily Renee resorted to it - it would have been uncomfortable, even disturbing to see it.
Valus spoke up as well, first stating something she hadn't known - that Modoki would feel pain if he did. That was useful to know, and then -
"Me? You want me to -" The irony that he was convinced she could be trusted... it was comments like that which supported her, made her lies all the stronger. She did not have any flaws, except when something like... that had happened. The anomaly with Renee. Normally, they wouldn't have expected a thing.
Imperceptibly, she relaxed, unaware of how intently her partner was staring at her.
"Uh... sure. I'll do my best!"

The moment Renamon spoke Ryusuke began to see things going just as they had outside of the factory, and immediately moved to put a stop to it. He understood Renamon's rage, but there was next to nothing that could be done about ModokiBetamon's situation with what they currently knew, and Ryusuke was not about to lose another chance at finding a way home to a second temper tantrum from the fox like digimon. If he knew a way to free ModokiBetamon, he would've done so in a heartbeat, but that was neither here nor there.
"Or else what?" Ryusuke said, stepping past Valus to place himself between the man and the digimon and his expression stern as he looked up at Renamon, completely unflinching - it left Valus with a clear run to the room and bathroom behind them, but that would either result in him running straight into Monodramon or back into the same dead end if he decided to make a run for it. "Think.Do you honestly think he knows how to disable that chip? Even if you tried to beat it out of him, he's already proven back at the factory that ModokiBetamon feels whatever pain he feels. What happens if he were to die? Would you be willing to risk whatever happens to ModokiBetamon as a result? I don't like this anymore than you do, but for the moment there's not much more we can do but accept it and move on."
Ryusuke was hoping he'd reached her before all reason evaporated from her mind like last time. If anything he was counting on the fact that she and ModokiBetamon were fast friends to cut through the fog that was forming in her head. Valus wasn't helping matters, either, and above all Ryusuke simply wanted to tell him to shut the hell up. What was he hoping to accomplish by speaking up at that specific point in time? The last thing he needed or probably wanted was Renamon's attention, especially given that she'd been so enraged that she'd simply ignored everything he'd said last time they'd met, and it was that line of thought that brought Ryusuke's own attention to the man behind him next.
"And I'm sorry, but no. I'm willing to get along with you for the moment, but I never said I was willing to trust you beyond what you were willing to risk yourself. You purposely instigated a fight back at the factory, ran from us on sight, and if what I saw back in the kitchen wasn't the product of some hallucination, attempted to kill whoever was following you through electrocution. You might think Shion is trustworthy, and she probably is, but I'm not going to take anything you say at face value without proof." Ryusuke continued, turning halfway around to face Valus as well, just as stern with him as he'd been with Renamon. He didn't know what the man was playing at given that he had very little to offer them in exchange for his solitude or safety, but Ryusuke wasn't at all stupid and had no desire to be tricked into letting Valus go until he had what he needed.
"No offense intended, miss." Ryusuke added, almost as an afterthought, glancing over his shoulder at Shion as he spoke.

Renamon was taken aback by the assault all three humans launched at her, their words ranging from reasoning, like Shion's, to threats, like Valus', to both reasoning and accusations like Ryusuke's. A urge of anger went through her head, and irritation towards humans. Humans, it figures. They always think only about their own. - an ironic voice was heard in her head again. She shook it to make it go away...
The fox did not exactly remember what happened back at the factory, but judging from what Yagami told her, she was being ... scary. And evil. She wanted to kill a person. That was not good at all, that ... wasn't her. So she decided to control herself, no matter how much she wanted to wipe those perceived and non-existent smirks off their faces... ... And besides, I wouldn't fight in a cramped place like this being so outnumbered... - the voice added in her head. She wasn't sure if this was a reason to be relieved or afraid. However...
- You ... are right, ... Shion... and Yagami... - she did not hide her bitterness here. The renamon did manage to agree that the boy probbaly didn't know to disable something as complex as a brain chip... But what else could she do? Resign? Allow him escape unpunished? No, no! That cannot happen. Renee's mind feverishly thought on what to do, when ... the voice was head again:
- Honey, let me handle this...
- Huh? No... - she answered to herself mentally.
- Please, I promise I will behave...
- Who ... are you?
But she did not hear the answer. For a few moments the renamon looked like she was ... in some sort of a trance, standing still, face expression blank, before ... suddenly, it changed. It wasn't the blank one, or angry one, or afraid one either ... it was sly. And there was something sinister in that smirk that appeared on her face. She chuckled, albeit it wasn't a friendly one at all.
- "Else what?" ... you asked. I can tell... Not dumb muscle, I am... Underestimate me ... do not. I cannot harm him ... true. But ... suffer, he will ... either way. I can ... force him to stay ... here. In this world. Forever. Follow him... everywhere he goes. Ryusuke ... find his way ... eventually. You won't, Valus. Ruin ... your every chance to get back ... I will. And ... make you endure ... psychological torture... I can think up. All kinds of... - she said with a low chuckle, approaching Valus, putting her hand on his head, stroking it a bit...
- Be a good ... boy... Chips ... you know not ... much of. Tell us then... Modoki ... where did you get? Who ... sold? Who ... caught? How? Everything ... you know.

Valus' spirits rose when he heard Shion say that she'd do her best. Not one of the people gathered here approved of him, Modoki included, but out of all of them Shion seemed to be the least willing to judge. She looked uncomfortable, probably because of the threat of violence that still clouded the air, but she kept it quiet. She probably just wanted them to all go home peacefully after another chat, like Modoki did.
But then, that outcome was really too much to hope for now, wasn't it?
Yagami spoke to him and Renamon as if they were both children. Inappropriate given that he looked younger than both of them, if only because of his rather unimpressive height, but he seemed determined to serve as a mediator regardless. He shot down Renamon's hopes of forcing the information out of him, and likewise ruled out the option of including Shion in the negotiations.
That didn't set well with him... but it set worse with Renamon.
Modoki heard the fox Digimon chuckle and frowned at the sudden change in tone, while Valus' mind took a trip back in time, recalling how she'd been with him at the Factory. Yagami was the only reason he'd survived that encounter, but Monodramon wasn't here now, only Modoki and BlackGabumon. And Renamon was so close to him now - like when she'd used that weird switching power to change places with Modoki!
"Don't touch me... get away!!" he part hissed, part whimpered, backing away from her as she stroked his hair, sending shudders running through his spine. His eyes shifting, he looked around wildly for an escape, but there was none.
The terror was back again, the terror he hadn't been able to forget. It had never gone away, really, it just sat there in the back of his mind. Waiting for this to happen like it knew it would. Renamon was going to take away his life one way or another even if she couldn't hurt him. She didn't need to.
Why had he smashed that TV? Why hadn't he escaped while he'd still had the chance? One near death experience should have been enough, but he'd thought he could get away with it... he'd been wrong.
"Renee... you never said them sort o' things before now, no rightly. Wha's come over you?" Valus was too afraid to tear his eyes away from the monster standing in front of him now, but he recognized a fearful edge in Modoki's voice too, matched by the grim frown she now wore instead of a smile.
Waddling over to stand by Yagami, Modoki glanced up at the blonde human with apprehension, before resting her eyes only on Renamon again. Feeling frightened of your own friend... it was a horrible thing to contemplate.

Well, that was quick. Valus' suggestion was shot down - almost a relief, really - and she looked down.
"It's alright, I knew you didn't mean it as an insult -" she began, before cutting herself off as Renee stepped forward. Hearing her voice, her entire manner change like that sent a chill down her spine. It reminded her of herself, of lying, but she was almost certain that this was no act or deception.
Valus' reaction as she stroked his head was all too familiar, and it was a struggle to keep herself from reacting. Again, she wavered on almost dropping the lie entirely - but this time she managed to focus, taking a step forward. BlackGabumon had been hanging back this whole time, but he followed her closely, and the thought of protection made her feel a little better about a possible confrontation.
"Renee! What are you doing? You're scaring him!" she exclaimed, forcing fear and surprise into her own voice. Surprisingly, BlackGabumon shouldered her aside before she could continue her admittedly rather foolhardy approach, ensuring he was properly acting as bodyguard. "He won't tell you anything if you're acting like... that!" Intimidation had never occurred to her as a valid and useful tactic - mostly because terrified people hardly seemed very coherent. Even Modoki seemed frightened now, and Valus was clearly not intent on answering the question.
"You're acting worse than he is!" Though Valus' actions were morally reprehensible, Renee was the clear aggressor here, and the changes in mood were unnerving as well. Of course, given she was speaking up, she stood a chance of being picked as a new target, perhaps, but BlackGabumon was probably ready to defend her in that eventuality.
She doubted Ryusuke would watch quietly - he had already tried to calm Renee down before, so she would probably not be alone in her protest. Perhaps Modoki's words would also have an effect - the two clearly liked each other, perhaps enough to trigger another change in mood.

Relaxing slightly when he saw that he was appearing to get through to Renamon, the digimon grudgingly admitting that both Ryusuke and the third human there had valid points in their arguments, the teen's head turned when he heard the girl - Shion, he thought her name was? - speak to him.
"Still, I feel a bit bad about it. And sorry about not introducing myself outside, when I saw Valus making a run for it I just kind of reacted. My name's Yagami -" Ryusuke said, turning to face her and extending his right arm forward in an offer for a handshake as he spoke, only for his words to be cut off as something behind him changed. It wasn't a sound, change in lighting, or something else Ryusuke could really quantify, but more of a feeling, like there was another person there - while Ryusuke prided himself on being a logical person, his sixth sense was still very much alive, and the sudden change in the atmosphere of the cramped hallway was enough to make him cut off his words mid sentance and spin around to face the source. For some reason Ryusuke wasn't surprised when he saw that it was Renamon, nor that she had a similar stance and feel as when she'd snapped back at the factory. Not good - while he'd regained use of the appendage for the most part, his arm was still in no condition to be in another fight, and there was no telling what would happen if it took another hit like it had before. To be blunt, there wasn't anything he could do to stop Renamon if she acted, but fortunately she seemed to be in more of a talking mood at the moment. Trusting that ModokiBetamon would be able to somewhat control Renamon for the moment along with Shion, Ryusuke edged around the group as Renamon began speaking, reaching the door to the empty room and running to the window, planting his foot on the window sill and yanking it open after a second of struggling with it.
"Monodramon, get up here!" Ryusuke yelled, sticking his head out of the window to make sure the digimon patiently standing down on the street heard him. Monodramon, having been watching the bulding as steadfastly as he'd been from the start, noticed Ryusuke immediately and ran in through the front door, with the teenager pulling his head back in before turning and heading back towards the hallway - while he admittedly felt about taking advantage of Monodramon's devotion, there simply wasn't any time to explain, and he wasn't willing to let Valus slip through his fingers again. Entering the hallway just as Valus backed away from Renamon, with Monodramon appearing at the top of the stairwell and understanding the situation as soon as he saw Renamon, Ryusuke simply waited in place, his digimon mirroring him. While he had no idea how to pull it off if it happened again, Ryusuke was ready to intervene if Renamon decided to make another attempt on Valus' life like before, but for the meantime he and Monodramon would simply wait. Ryusuke felt like he should probably stop Renamon's line of questioning right then and there, an idea that Shion also seemed to share, but at the moment it quite simply wasn't worth the risk.

Renamon enjoyed what was going on thoroughly. She felt it in the air... The sensation... Fear, it was. A lot of it. They were afraid. The human she had her hands on, stroking his head with a a sort of perverse gentleness, his digimon, the girl... It felt good to her. To know that there are people terrified of her. Was a good way to lift self-esteem too. A nasty slasher smile on her face, she moved her head closer to the boy's ear, and whispered:
- Tell me what I want to know... And you won't worry about me... You ... will travel with Ryusuke... Back home... Home, don't you want to go home? Away from me... Very far away... But ... you can be silent... And we will continue our talk, on day and place of my choosing, when there will be nobody else around. A private date, honey... - her words were unheard to others, and, unlike before, articulate. She could feel him shiver, it was so ... intoxicating. She wanted to do more, but then...
- Stop ... this.
- Aww... Give me a few more moments! He almost cracked!
- Care... I do not. Stop... Friends... Modoki. You scare... Begone!
- Pffft... Alright alright. Sorry. Maybe I went over the top a little bit...
And then Renee's facial expression changed. From evil and malicious, to... just serious. Without any hint of that devilishness that was there only a little while ago. The fox took a step back away from the table, and stopped ruffling the boy's hair. She gave him a ... rather serious look in the eye, and said again:
- Tell me... know ... what I want to. Do this... no wish to... Again. - her voice sounded much kinder in comparison to ... well, herself again.
Good cop, bad cop...

Modoki remained silent, her question unanswered by Renee, in whom she continued to observe exhibiting strange and alarming behavior. Shaking her head from side to side in mutual disagreement as Shion spoke out, Yagami quickly summoned his Digimon, and with him here, all of them were now together. Although Renee Renamon leaned in closer to Valus, lowering her voice to naught but a whisper, the body language she was showing was enough to set off alarm bells inside the amphibian's mind... until suddenly she backed away.
Her expression... seemed normal now, and so was her voice... although the memory of what it had been before wouldn't go away quietly.
Through his ordeal, Valus hadn't moved, remaining stiff and immobile with an expression somewhere between terror and disgust frozen onto his face. Crawling over to him slowly, deliberately avoiding eye contact with Renee along the way, Modoki nudged the stricken boy's foot. Prompting him first to blink, and then to shudder all the way along his spine.
"A.I.R. I don't know what it stands for - but that's what they're called. AIR." his voice was croaky and monotonous, but he spoke regardless. Staring down at his feet as he told them what they wanted to know out of fear, resenting every second of it, forcing each syllable as he in turn was being forced to cooperate.
"I was never told that there was a way for people to get Digimon for free. I didn't know what they were, so I think they might have swindled me. There was talk of people disappearing. At the time, I didn't know why... I wanted protection. And somehow, that lead me to AIR, where they are in the real world."
Pausing for breath, Valus lifted his head up slightly, fixing Yagami with his begrudging stare. The blonde probably wouldn't like to hear what he was about to tell them next, but since they wanted the truth badly enough to force him into telling it - he'd tell it to them in full. Hopefully then they'd feel some small measure of the frustration he felt at being coerced into this.
"They catch the Digimon here and take them into the real world, and then they stick them in these rows of cages. I got to look at a lot of them, but they're costly. I chose Modoki because she was cheap, that's all. She was the strongest one that I could afford, and they didn't have much selection."
There was an attempt at smothering as gasp from down by Valus' feet, and Modoki's lips were trembling a little as she clamped them down. She'd never known his exact reasons for choosing her over the others, not before, although probably she'd suspected. Her feelings on the subject were unimportant though. It wasn't like she could run off, thanks to the Digivice. She'd be forced to listen as long as he'd be forced to say it.
"... should I carry on? Or does anyone have questions?" he asked in a mock helpful tone, albeit sarcastically. Modoki huddled into a small shape on the floor beside him, still digesting the fact that there was a whole other side to Renee that she didn't know about, let alone the knowledge that her life had been bought with pocket money.

Immersed in her role, Avari found it difficult to parse through the reasoning for taking a stand. Renamon was dangerous and clearly willing to torture Valus if need be, and probably eliminate or injure anyone who interfered in that. Neither... Yagami - she assumed that was a last name, but couldn't be sure - nor his partner seemed eager to stop her, despite outnumbering her and a rather clear discomfort with the situation. Rushing in blindly was stupid, even standing here was stupid, and her thoughts focused on getting away, leaving...
But she couldn't, and she found it ironic that her partner seemed intent on getting her away when that was what she had wanted to do anyways.
The Digimon's manner changed again, less sadistic and more serious. She wasn't even bothering to keep track now. Whether it was genuine or not, Valus replied without much more hesitation, and she took the opportunity to learn more. It seemed he was a regular fount of information, and certainly useful even if she disapproved of his owning a slave. Even then, she didn't even dislike him - that would imply she really cared. However, BlackGabumon certainly did - as he continued speaking, her partner stiffened, growling softly. Of course, she couldn't appear impassive to Modoki's plight, and she bit her lip, eyes widening.
"You make it sound like she's some cheap pet or something," she murmured. "Don't you feel bad about it at all?"
Lying in a situation like this was hardly beneficial to her. It just made everyone else react, and created a cycle. She hardly wanted to provoke Renee more, or instigate some sort of righteous indignation. However, if she said nothing, it would be noticed - and there was no believable way to explain Shion not being concerned and angry. It was a tangled mess, and yet another reason to simply avoid encounters when possible. How much longer would she have to keep up this farce? She wanted to leave, to return to her apartment or at least some quiet place without her ever-present shadow following her.
She carefully reached out to tug gently on BlackGabumon's fur. "Valus... I don't think I can travel with you. I need time to... think." The truth. If only they knew...

As Monodramon stood at the end ofthe hall he glanced over to Ryusuke, the teen shaking his head subtly in response - things had turned out well for them in the last fight because they'd had the element of surprise, and if they were forced to fight in such cramped quarters things would get ugly fast. While he didn't particularly like Valus and rather vehemantly disagreed with the other guy's views, he didn't want to see him come to harm. It went beyond the fact that Valus knew of a way out - if anything, he could have just asked the girl to help them, as she seemed to know where she was and didn't seem to be at odds with them the way Valus had been from the beginning. It wasn't even so much that Ryusuke believed that harming him would be wrong, whether if felt justified or not, which while the underlaying reason as to how he'd handled the situation so far was not the main reason Ryusuke felt obligated to stop things now. While Renamon was caught in the heat of the moment, so to speak, she did not at all like conflict from what he'd been led to believe of her so far - if anything she'd portrayed herself as a pacifist. She'd been rather shaken by what she had nearly done to Ryusuke's arm in the last confrontation, and if he didn't know better would have been convinced she was afraid of herself immediately following the realization of what had happened. While she may enjoy whatever resulted from this encounter for that brief moment, he did not want to contemplate how it would affect her in the long run.
Focusing his attention back on the interchange between the man and the digimon, however, Ryusuke grew even more uneasy as the guy spilled what he knew, which while certainly valuable information, was not at all helpful in the current moment - if anything it would do more harm than good. Everything relating to the overall subject of how ModokiBetamon had ended up in her current situation had only further aggravated Renamon in the past, and what they needed right now was a way to calm her down, not rile her up even more. And then there was the fact that it would mean Renamon herself would leave, another thing that Ryusuke did not want to happen. While he'd only known her for a few days, she'd proven herself to be sincere and reliable for the most part, and beyond a doubt helpful without ever really being asked to be. If anything, there was a very good chance Ryusuke would have never even survived his first night in the digital world had she not been there, and then there was the fact that Ryusuke did not want to be left alone with Monodramon - while he attempted to be friendly and helpful, Renamon was by far the better conversationalist despite her broken but steadily improving speech, and Ryusuke had no idea how he'd keep his sanity with only Monodramon to talk to.
"Renamon, you got what you wanted, forcing him to keep talking won't help us, and at this point he's deliberately trying to get a rise out of you. We should go, staying here won't help us any." Ryusuke said, mildly disturbed by her sudden personality change that he had a front row seat to. It was extremely reminiscent to what had happened back at the factory, but what Ryusuke didn't know was whether that personality was merely hiding and able to surface at will, or if the Renamon he knew was the one in control - that being said, Ryusuke didn't particularly want to find out. Valus was proving to be more of a hinderance than he would ever prove helpful if they stayed - at the very least the guy knew how to goad people into doing things they'd likely later regret.
"I'm sorry to ask, but could you at least point us towards a way back to the human world? You're not at all involved, but it would be greatly appreciated. You seem to know your way around here, so I'm figuring it's worth a shot to ask." Ryusuke said, glancing over to Shion briefly but keeping the focus of his attention on Renamon. Once she answered they could be on their way, although Ryusuke had no idea what would result from this. Given her rather understandable obsession with this group that was capturing and selling digimon, Ryusuke had a feeling Renamon would want to go after them at some point, foolish or not. That, however, would be in the future, with the task of finding a way back to his world being in the now.

Renee listened to everything that was said ... silently. His words hurt her. They hurt her a lot. The very thought of being some petty human's slave insulted her to the core. There was turmoil, there was desire for retribution, there were many things. But maybe for the first time, the fox's face expression was impenetrable. A stone mask, like that many renamons were on daily basis. Not angry, not sad, just ... serious as hell.
The boy, indeed, did not know much, but... what he did was enough... enough to sparkle... memories. AIR... her dream she had a few days ago was coming back to her, as she pronounced the word several times in a row: - AIR... AIR... Familiar... it sounds... - she muttered to herself. He mentioned cages... And she remembered cages! And herself... She remembered...
--------
- Just how long long this bullshit is going to take? I am tired of standing here the whole day!
- Hey, it's not my fault the stupid animal wouldn't behave in a cage! So we need to stay here and make sure she doesn't do anything we might regret later...
Two masculine voices were heard before the dark slowly disappeared, replaced with fluorescent cold light. Dead light, it was not alive, it couldn't bring life... The men the voice belonged to looked like soldiers, they had guns... But ... why was their image barred? Were there bars between them?
No that was wrong... or maybe right to a degree... Thing is, they stood outside the cage... and she was ... well, inside. On that cold, metal floor. The bars in front of her were bended, bitten... damaged in several places. And guns were pointed at her... Yes, they obviously were talking about her... Wait ... stupid animal?! Did he just call her that?
- Call me that one more time you vermin and I'm gonna...
- Do what? You're in a cage and I have a gun aiming at you. So stay put you useless waste of data or whatever you're made from. - the guard talked back, making the fox choke on it. He was right, he could badmouth her all he wanted, and she couldn't do a thing... Or maybe she could? Her hand extended for the bar...
*BANG!* - the bullet ricocheted a centimeter away from her hand, making her dodge to another side of the cage in a reflex. Shit, these guys meant business. Her expression was frightened for a moment, before turning to that of rage... Powerless rage...
- I say keep your dirty hands away from the bars you whore.
- Dude, they're digimon. Can they even be whores?
- Beats me. Maybe. Wouldn't try it on this one though... You hear that, fugly? And when the convoy arrives I'll make sure you're tossed into solitary confinement for long for making us assigned to this ... pound.
And she only could choke on his words...
------------
She finally snapped out of that flashback, her gaze gaining focus once more. Focusing on Valus so hard she could drill a hole through him with that stare. And then heard Ryusuke's words. It was a wrestle of rage, versus reason... And during that inner struggle... the voice appeared again...
- Humiliation... you remember it, don't you?
- Yes...
- They hurt you too... You remember it?
- No...
- You will soon enough. And then, would you want revenge?
- Revenge... - she muttered to herself, thinking out loud accidentally. Yes, that would be adequate... if she knew what was done to her... But ... she remembered what she did when she suddenly gave in to her anger... she only hurt her friends... No. Revenge would be nice, but ... not now.
- Indeed... What I wanted... I got. Direction... rest ... up to me is... Thank you ... Valus. - she said to Valus, upon hearing Yagami's words, and then approached him, looking at him very attentively. It was not her bad side now, no ... it was her current, nice one... Which made what she said even more dreadful.
- Treat ... Modoki well. Check on ... I will... time to time... She ... complains if. And you ... with me ... will go... on a date. - she chuckled, but it was her, Renee that said that, as she knelt down and petted Modoki, saying to her a few good-byes.
- Take ... care. Miss you ... I will. Find way... free you... will. Promise. - she said, slightly hugging her, and letting go, standing up, and taking her place at Ryusuke's side. A perpetual frown was on her face, as she said:
- I'm done. Move ... we should.

His attempt to further antagonize them... it failed!? Worse, the only ones it managed to put off were Shion and her partner. They hadn't been his targets at all. Asked if he felt bad about speaking like that, Valus stifled a sudden urge to twitch. What... what could he do now? He couldn't fight or run away, and his words had lost their edge. Even more than before, he was helpless now, alone and incapable of harming anyone except those he didn't wish to.
And then Renamon started speaking again in another voice. Approaching him, probably to make good of her earlier threats, or just to tease him now that she was impervious to everything he could possibly throw at her. Instead, she thanked him. And that was it? Really? A few threats, yes, but...
Modoki pushed back against the hug appreciatively as Renee crouched down to embrace her, relieved that she was back to normal. Instead of speaking, she simply looked up into the fox's eyes, which would be enough to convince her of whom she was dealing with, had she any remaining doubts. After the fox returned to a standing position, she inched away towards the doorway to the bedroom, standing there with her back turned to the now stricken Valus.
Just a commodity, was she?
Though she didn't show it, behind her somber face that statement had her burning. While she was no stranger to Valus' lack of charm, the fact that he was technically her partner made it that much more painful in retrospect. Compared with the other partnerships present, even the one between Ryusuke and Renee was more legitimate than theirs. To have something like that... wasn't what she craved, although it would be nice to have it, just once.
Valus had probably realized by now anyway how much he'd built the situation up in his head, she reckoned. Yagami and Renee seemed to be relenting now that they had the information they wanted, even if it was incomplete. He was probably thinking what would have happened if he'd just told them that from the beginning. Shion looked like she would be leaving soon as well, like she'd wanted to do for a while now.
Soon it would be just her and Valus again. And the silence would be agony.
Don't go. Wait. Stay here. Both of them wanted to say those words, but couldn't bring themselves to do it. Valus stood stiff as a corpse, looking down at his feet, wanting to be left alone so that he could mourn. Modoki waiting until she could sneak away into the shadows underneath the bed and seethe for a while where nobody could see her ugly feelings.

So she was suddenly the guide? How the tables had turned...
"I'm not really all the familiar with the area to be honest - but the gate we came through is... about two and a half hours away. It's beside this big... pillar, I think. It doesn't really look like anything special, and it's not the tallest thing around but it's made of this pretty dark stone, so it should stand out. I don't know which direction it was in..." she said, expression turning thoughtful.
BlackGabumon twitched an ear, not relaxing despite Renee's sudden change in attitude. "Northwest," he reported tersely, and then went back to studying the other Digimon as if still suspecting her of being a threat - and one who hadn't even made a move towards Avari yet. He turned as Renee made her way back to Ryusuke's side, only relaxing somewhat when there was a relatively safe distance between them. "We should go."
He was right, and she finally had an opening to take her leave from the group. It had been a... dramatic meeting, in the worst way possible.
"Modoki? I'm sorry."
With that, she turned and, flanked by her partner, began to walk down the stairs. It was past time for her to figure out some way of separating herself from BlackGabumon, no matter how much he protested. She needed to think... and forget.
