A new Digidestined? Avari didn't meet those often - when she met people at all - and he certainly seemed uncertain enough to fit the role. But... did someone yanked suddenly into the Digital World end up in such a place? There was a gate, after all, but...
Maybe she was just becoming so delusional as to believe BlackGabumon about this place. It was empty now. Safe enough, despite the atmosphere. Besides, she didn't find it scary. Dangerous was still up in the air, but frightening? No, she did not find emptiness of any sort frightening. Still, champions did roam around the area, according to her partner. That alone meant a newly met pair should probably not have come here....
A little too much to consider, as usual, but Orson didn't have the tells she would have pinpointed on an obvious liar. So either he was sincere or rather skilled at it - neither which meant much to her.
"Do you mean this world or just this place? I'm afraid I don't know much about where we are right now - it's kind of spooky though, right? - but this world is the Digital World! You get here through computers and run around and explore... and stuff, I guess. I'm not really sure why we get partners and can go here, to be honest." She laughed, a little nervously, and beamed at Strabimon when he spoke up. "It's totally fine if you're shy," she assured them both, noting the irony herself. She had met a mirror of herself - in most of the ways that mattered - and was now lying, even to him.
Well, she had to. Someone else was watching and listening, after all.
"I'm trying to decide if I should stay here or try to head back to a gate," she declared, as if she actually cared about what Orson might think. "Creepy mansion... or walking kilometres back in the dark? Which sounds better?"
Of course, it didn't matter. Perhaps it had been BlackGabumon's apprehension, or the newcomer's arrival - either way, everything had come together and made the decision for her. But saying this was an easy way to lead into an exit. It wouldn't take much longer...

snake in the grass, watch your feet, let me pass--and the mice in the walls, they find joy in it all. if there's a god that could save me, I'd ask him to open the skies and do it now but it's just a chemical I'm not a snake, I'm just falling apart again. Oh, lovely. It was wonderful when people played along, lied just as effortlessly as he did. Except for tall dark and unsociable over there and his anthropomorphic canid, that is--but no matter. The brooding boy would simply be ignored for the duration of this conversation. He turned towards Shion, opening his shoulders a little wider. I trust you, the posture said. I consider you a friend.
"I guess that makes sense, I mean about the computers... I mean, the last thing I remember before all this was sitting down to work on an essay." Did he look young enough to still be in school? Did he seem put off the right amount by this world or talking data? Ugh, the cheerfulness. It sickened him. But wait, there's more! She seemed to be including everyone in the making of her decision, asking politely like a lady should. It was far more likely, however, that the choice had been made long ago. But he'd play along.
"I don't know if I'd want to be out there in the dark... I mean, I think I heard some.. things. I don't even know what they were, but... they sounded big." Of course, he'd heard nothing of the sort. The natives knew to stay well away from an AIR member on business, lest they trod unknowing into an experiment--or worse, a trap. He didn't set traps. But Avery, Orson, whatever, surely wasn't the only human who came to these parts, though he'd had yet to meet anyone else.
But this wasn't the moment to think about digimon. Here there were two nice little digidestined, nicely gift-wrapped in an old manor. How would he play this out? He'd not given himself away, hadn't shown his hand by opting to leave the house--after all, what newcomer in their right mind would be willing to venture out into the wilderness of the Digiworld at night? So that left his cover as intact as it ever was, though he suspected that is had never been accepted by at least half of the people in the room.
Hagurumon floated a ways behind Avery, mildly intrigued. She was quite certain that everything would come out for the best here, though it really depended on your definition of 'best'. Avery's best would involve experimentation on the other humans and likely their digimon. The other humans in question's best likely involved escape from the newcomers. She smiled, tilting this way and that in the air as she waited.

Right. Hayate gave Avari a dull look before his eyes traveled elsewhere, busying himself with observing his surroundings again as he found himself not so integral to the conversation. He was not in the mood to talk to these people now, not even pausing to revel in the fact he was in a mood to start with. There was no reveling to be had actually, as he was quite sure the fact he could feel even remotely irritated with the situation meant that something about this place was off. He never got irritated, he never got anything so... This... This made no real sense, there had to be something wrong with this mansion for him to feel this way. Strabimon seemed rather anxious even without knowing what was going though his partner's head, in fact not knowing was why he was so anxious to start with. Sure his partner was usually as blank as a cloudless sky, but even so he could still read Hayate like a newly printed book... Usually, but not now, and that scared him a little. This was unsettling in two ways; one being that the fact that he'd suddenly been cut off was startling, and two the young man seemed to be exhibiting some of the darker emotions of the human spectrum. The fact it had been his idea to come to this blasted mansion in the first place was weighing rather heavily on his mind as it was, and was nearly thinking that maybe he shouldn't have ideas anymore if this was how they were going to go from now on... Well one bad one wasn't bad but weren't they almost always? "He's lying." Strabimon blinked and looked over at Hayate in surprise, mostly due to how sure and concrete the other's tone was rather than the fact that he'd even talked at all. The young man's dark blue eyes were focused on 'Orson' as he spoke, as they had been shortly after the newcomer had started to speak. He'd been watching the other for any imperfections, any tells, anything that would let him know what he'd suspected since the man in the lab coat had walked in. He was a liar so it only made sense that he could pick at an act as convincing as his and identify when such a thing was in use... This was what made him so sure, so unwilling to retract his statement or anything even as his partner looked at him confusedly and even scrambled to make up for the mistake. " Ummm he doesn't mean that! Heh, he's just... Tired and grumpy, y'know?" The digimon said almost nervously, just trying to eliminate the possibility of a confrontation. That was the last thing he wanted at the moment considering where they were and Hayate's state. He felt like he was partly right about the tired and grumpy part, given that his partner would probably be asleep if they were at home but the thing was... Hayate didn't get grumpy. So here was the heart of the problem as the wolf-like digimon saw it, this place wasn't just dark in lighting choices and it had been an incredibly bad idea to come here so late. Hayate meanwhile just continued to watch 'Orson' as Strabimon tried to deflect his claim, but he knew he was right... And now he just wanted to see the reaction it would get. Would the newcomer own up to lying and come clean, or would he keep up the charade and act like what he'd claimed was nothing. Either way the young man knew he was right, there was just something off about the other male... He was so talkative, his posture almost too like 'you should trust me'. Not once did the possibility he was somehow paranoid cross his mind, as with a lot of other things, he didn't get paranoid. Therefore 'Orson' was a liar, and that was all there was to it. | [atrb=width,100]mood :Suspicious/ worriedkarma :-1 Avery for being a filthy liar? *shot* ooc :omg a post I'm actually happy with yay ;u; |

A low crackle built in the air, followed by a bright flash and a sort of shockwave--a rip in space--that sent Avery stumbling backwards, hitting the wall of the hallway and bracing himself against it. By the time the afterimage of the flash (a flash brighter than magnesium, Avery would have to look carefully into this, oh, this could be exciting) had faded, the girl and her digimon had gone. Whether they'd fled during the event or been taken by it would remain unknown. He straightened up, brushing the dust off of his coat, and turned to the remaining human. He stared at him, hopefully projecting the right amount of uncertainty onto his face as he decided what to do here. He saw two options: to"come clean", as they say, or to continue the charade. The digimon seemed to believe Avery's deception, and that was a foot up on making the boy believe it as well, but... but the farce was beginning to bore him. He cast a look to Hagurumon, still thinking--he wasn't good at snap decisions, and didn't want to have to make this one. After a moment or two, Avery settled upon the middle ground. He maintained the innocent expression and posture a little longer, staring with a seemingly open face at the other human. "Wh... why would you say that? I haven't done anything to you or anything! We just met!" He sounded shocked, a little hurt, but mostly afraid. The other girl had just disappeared, after all. "Besides, don't we have more pressing matters to attend to?" He inwardly grimaced, realizing belatedly that the language might have been a touch too formal. Ah, well, too late now. -- Hagurumon had felt the event coming before either of the humans; being a Digimon as well as a machine made her intimately familiar with the Digiworld's peculiar moods. She didn't have time to warn anyone, though, too respectful of the tense moment before the rupture in space to break it. She remained where she was when it did come, unaffected by the shockwave--whether that was due to her Digimon nature or because she was floating was unknown--and floating closer to Avery once it had passed. She could still sense the tension, though perhaps the flash would give a moment's distraction from it. She offered no counsel as Avery talked (after all, she wasn't supposed to know him very well, according to "Orson's" deception), merely hovering there with her perennial, enigmatic smile still in place.

Hayate didn't move even after the even was over, looking over to see that Strabimon had also been sent back onto the stairs by the wave of force from... Whatever had just happened. The young man winced a little bit from the pain falling had caused in his back, slowly getting up and putting his hands on his back as if maybe it might help. His partner hadn't gotten up yet though, almost as if he was perhaps knocked unconscious somehow. Further looking showed him that the bipedal digimon had indeed hit his head on the stairs on his way down, and had been knocked out cold... So that left him essentially alone.
"Wh... why would you say that? I haven't done anything to you or anything! We just met!"
Hayate turned his attention to the liar at this, trying to ignore the pain in his back as he let his hands go back to his sides. His eyes narrowed just a touch as the other went on to say they had more pressing matters to attend to, but really he didn't see what whey were supposed to do... Or how it even really mattered what had just happened. The Digital World was a very strange place as he had learned from prior observations, and really he saw no need to act as if something incredibly odd had happened... Because realistically this entire place was odd. The situation was odd, they were standing in a decrepit old mansion with monsters by their sides. His was technically on the floor out cold but that was not the point.
"Because it's true... You're lying. You don't even care that girl disappeared, you're just glad it wasn't you probably." His voice was quiet and calm, but deceptively so as his eyes betrayed him. For once his usually dull eyes were conveying the most vibrant example of anger he had ever managed... Which was little more than a small spark, but him that was a great accomplishment. It wasn't really one that he would ever celebrate however, as the emotions he would rather feel were on the opposite end of the spectrum. Hayate also really wasn't paying attention to how he was feeling still though, as if he would rather not acknowledge the fact he was exhibiting anything as dark and volatile as anger.
"And I can say it because I know a liar when I see one... Because I'm something of a liar as well." It really wasn't something he had wanted to admit, but the explanation defending his words had come straight out. Hayate didn't really expect the other to drop the charade just yet though for some reason, as if he thought the other might give it another shot to really try and convince him. His eyes went to Hagurumon for just a moment, frowning just faintly as he remembered one thing... He was sort of defenseless if the other was to command his digimon to attack him. He could fight off 'Orson', he knew this... But digimon were literally quite a different beast to handle.
Meanwhile his 'beast' was still unconscious on the stairs, entirely useless.

Avery sighed, noticing the downed Digimon, his only ally (excluding Hagurumon) in the situation. He was bored, and there was work to be done--finding more out about the mysterious rip in space--and this boy was preventing him from doing it. The time had come to dispense with the act; it no longer served any purpose.
He straightened up entirely, no longer wearing the slouch of a student, and pushed his glasses further up his nose as his face lost the innocent quality and gained a mad-scientist one. He felt more or less like his old self, then, a snake slipping into more comfortable skin.
"Awwww, you caught me. The jig is up." He laughed, brushing off his coat again. "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids and your dog." He nodded at the unconscious Strabimon, smirking. He then grew serious, staring coolly at the boy. "...so. I came here because I have work to do, and you are not going to interfere. If you sit nice and still there, little boy, you might get out of this alive."
He pulled a device from his pocket and used it to scan the floor where the girl had been, trusting the boy to stay still as he'd warned. Besides, he had Hagurumon to warn him if the youth moved. He even wanted movement on the other human's part; it would be an excuse to take him down and secret him away for testing on. He'd yet to capture a live Digidestined intact, and he knew that if he had but one it would further his research in leaps and bounds.
Perhaps he should make that clear to the boy? It could serve to intimidate him further.
"...I'll be kidnapping you if you try to fight me." Probably not the best phrasing, but it would get his point across. "No one will ever find you--in fact, once I pay them a visit, they won't remember you long enough to start looking." Yes, that seemed suitably menacing. Just to add make a final impression, he added a "Personally, I hope you fight. I've been looking for someone like you." to really drive things home.
He'd made sure he sounded dead serious, and he was. At the moment he wanted nothing more than to go to work on the boy, testing whatever new equipment AIR had on him. It would make Avery's life so much easier, and much less dangerous: he wouldn't have to test the stuff on himself anymore. He didn't mind it much, though; testing things on oneself was every scientist's burden--it was honestly Hagurumon who he regretted testing things on. Not that he'd tell anyone, not even Hagurumon herself. With a different Digimon to test things on, however, that burden would be lifted. That was all Avery really wanted.
