It was all Strabimon's idea to go here, Hayate was hardly the adventurous type.
The young man looked up at the tall and foreboding mansion before him and his partner, a little frown on his face as he examined the place. The beast digimon at his side had brought him here specifically, for reasons unknown to the human... It was probably going to turn into an attempt to scare him or something like that. An attempt that would in all likelihood fail, because not only was there that pesky emotionlessness of his in the way but Hayate just wasn't easily startled; it would take quite a lot to actually scare him. He could tell just by looking at this place that it wouldn't be enough, in fact nothing in this world seemed to startle or surprise him... Odd yes, but that was just how he reacted, or rather he just didn't react.
Strabimon however saw no flaws in his plan at all, bouncing on his heels a bit as if he was excited... Which he was. The wolf-like digimon was absolutely sure that this place was what Hayate needed to get the ball rolling towards him feeling emotions like everyone else. Fear was not a great thing to feel of course but it could cause other feelings; the need to protect, the need to get the hell out of somewhere, and other things. What these other things were was not entirely important to the rookie at the moment though, just figuring he would find out what would come out of this little plan of his soon enough.
"So ready to go in?" He asked with a little smirk, his gaze leaving the mansion in front of them to his partner's emotionless face... Nothing unusual there, and that was a problem. Hayate glanced at Strabimon a moment before starting to walk forward, his hands in his pockets and he strode up to the door with his digimon close behind. The fact that the human was being silent wasn't entirely a good sign either, because the beast digimon knew what that meant; that he wasn't interested in what was going on, he had nothing to say or worth saying. The fact that Hayate was stalling at the door meant that he wasn't sure if he should even bother going in, and was contemplating leaving right then and there.
That didn't fit into the plan anywhere.
"Well c'mon! Go on, the door won't bite!" Strabimon said in an encouraging tone, watching as the young man beside him seemed to hesitate a moment before taking a hand from his pocket and opening the door. Hayate walked in slowly, as if he was still considering turning back and going home... This hadn't been his idea after all. His dull eyes looked over their surroundings with a near nonexistent sense of curiosity, noting the dust that coated the floors along with everything else. The young man stepped forward a little and looked up towards the ceiling, tilting his head to the side a touch as he noted the lit chandelier that hung there; it was covered in cobwebs and still more dust, watching as a spider slowly descended down from it before traveling back up as they would in the real world.
"...What is this place called?" Hayate asked after a few moments, his voice just as quiet and flat as usual. Ah, finally a sign of intrigue, even if it was conveyed in the least emotional way possible! Strabimon smiled at his partner and stepped forward some, his feet making marks in the dust as he walked like one's steps would in snow. "This place is called Grey Lord's Mansion, said 'Grey Lord' being a Myotismon. However no one is even entirely sure he was ever around to begin with. Can't say I blame 'em with all the dust." The rookie explained as he looked around the room himself, shortly after speaking giving a loud sneeze.
Hayate remained unaffected as the noise resonated within the room, still scanning the area before going forward to the staircase. He was a little unsure about traveling up it though, lest it was rotting and he'd end up falling through... He didn't need something like that to happen to him. With this judgement in mind he forgot about going up the stairs and just decided to head into one of the rooms, Strabimon following dutifully behind him. He was waiting for just the right moment to do something to try and scare his partner, but for now he was distracted by the dining room they had wandered into.
Hayate looked far less intrigued by the dusty silverware and plates than Strabimon did, but he went forward to explore the room better all the same. The air had an oddly heavy and still quality to it, something that he was managing to ignore easily enough. To the twenty-three year old this place was nothing more than an empty house, the exact way he would react to a house in the real world that was like this. His partner however was a little shaken up but wouldn't let it show, aside from jumping as he accidentally brushed against the table.
This was most likely going to end up with the wolf-like digimon being scared instead of his partner at this rate.

Avari stared at the footprints clearly outlined by the thick coating of dust, wondering if she should have felt disappointed. Someone else was here then - two someones, going by the tracks that led inward. She might not have noticed them at all if BlackGabumon hadn't pointed them out - though of course, he had probably smelled or heard them. Though she had no real idea of how keen his senses were, she guessed they were far better than a human's. The fact that he was only wearing a canine pelt rather than being a canine seemed to have no effect on his canine-like senses, and she had stopped worrying much about it. Digimon didn't generally make much sense.
The mansion looked... rather impressive, if dusty. She had wanted to explore, and perhaps there would be something salvageable here to use in case she couldn't find an exit gate nearby. Now, though, with the knowledge that there was someone else here, she felt no real wish to go inside. What if it was someone she had met before?
"It is getting late," BlackGabumon observed. He didn't talk much, so the out of the blue nature of his statement made her turn to look at him. He stared back calmly, amber eyes unreadable.
"Not really.... The sun is still up."
"By the time we find our gate again, it will be night."
It took her a moment to realize what he was getting at, and then she frowned. He didn't express opinions often - in fact, this was the first time he had said more than just a report on if anyone was near, or if a Digimon they had encountered as a Rookie or a Champion. "You think we should go in, then?" she asked, only waiting for his nod before making a show of not caring. Either he knew why she was so reluctant to encounter people, or he didn't - either way, he probably wouldn't say anything to betray her to a stranger. "Well, alright...."
She was about to step inside properly when her partner once again spoke up, cementing her belief that something had to be going on - he never talked this much.
"I wish to go first," he announced, and nudged the door open a bit more, clawed feet stirring up dust as he entered. Vaguely intrigued about this change in mood - was there something important about this building? - she came in after him, shutting the door with a bit more force than necessary.
The creak as it closed and the actual click of it shutting was louder than she had intended, and she tensed up as the sound echoed, only muffled slightly by the dust everywhere.

Strabimon froze as he heard voices, the digimon's acute hearing allowing him to catch the noise of strangers. His fur bristled a little as if he was immediately expecting a threat, turning his head back towards the door as if to look through it to where the newcomers were. The beast digimon put down the fork he had been looking over back in the outline of dust on the table where the piece of silverware had been for who knows how long, his eyes going over to Hayate. His partner was currently looking at the fireplace, the human's back to him as dull eyes examined the collection of ancient ashes in the long forgotten hearth.
"Hayate-" "I know."
Even before the door slammed shut, Hayate had managed to catch the voices and figured out that someone else had come to the mansion due to the silence of the place. However he seemed rather indifferent to the fact there were strangers here, unlike Strabimon who seemed rather alarmed by the idea. The man couldn't bring himself to feel worried at all about it as he was with most things, but at the same time he felt as if there wasn't anything to worry about anyway. Then again he really wasn't one to worry about anything ever, not even when the situation really called for it; he merely perceived things in a rational fashion and reacted accordingly.
Since he didn't see any reason to stay hiding in the room like this, Hayate immediately turned and started for the door. His partner gave a little gasp for whatever reason and reached forward, gripping the young man by the arm and making him turn his head to stare down at him questioningly. Strabimon blinked as he noted that his partner's dark blue eyes seemed unusually cold for just a moment before it went away... He didn't understand why Hayate would look at him that way, it was very odd. "Um... You should let me go first mate, in case it's dangerous." The beast digimon said lowly, maintaining eye contact with the young man despite how he had just been looked at.
Hayate blinked at the suggestion before shrugging his partner's hand off, putting his own on the handle of the door afterward. "There's no reason for that." He said in his usual quiet and calm voice, after a moment just going and opening the door despite Strabimon's quiet 'but' of disapproval. The digimon sighed faintly at his partner's behavior, still wondering what on earth had brought on that cold stare... He still felt chilled by the look actually, but he was trying to shake it off. It wasn't like the human had hurt him or was going to, he knew that his partner would never do that to him no matter what.
Strabimon watched quietly as his partner walked out into the front room, looking over Avari and BlackGabumon with that same nearly nonexistent curiosity that he had regarded the dusty mansion with. Hayate wondered if he'd need to speak with them or if they'd turn and leave; either way he seemed almost unwilling to be social for once, something about the girl before him seeming off somehow... He didn't know what it was though. The man's partner was partially confused by the fact that the human hadn't even greeted the strangers yet, whereas he was sure in the human world he would have greeted them with a fake but friendly smile and a hello. He supposed it would be up to him to handle the salutations, since Hayate seemed to suddenly have cold feet.
"Um.... Hello! This is my partner Hayate, and I'm Strabimon. Are you lost or anything?" The digimon asked with a friendly smile, not seeming to get the same odd vibe from Avari. He was also hoping that this would spur Hayate on to speak, but in the end all the human did was offer a polite nod of acknowledgement. The beast digimon didn't understand what was going on with his partner at all, first the cold look and now this... He was feeling a bit worried but he tried to push it away. Maybe the young man was just having an off day, or he was tired or something.
At least, he hoped that was it.

Avari studied the ones who had gotten here before them with open curiosity. Though the other's partner was vaguely wolf-like, he was far less bestial than any other Rookie Digimon she had seen before.
The human looked... normal, but familiar in a way that bothered her. She couldn't actually place it, and so she tried to figure it out while the partner spoke up, introducing himself and the human as Strabimon and Hayate. It was only when he nodded, the greeting empty of any emotion or interest, that she realized just what it was.
He acted like she would have if she wasn't lying.
That could mean... anything, really. She had no idea about his circumstances, or whether he too lied - was he like her at all, then? Or just someone who was apathetic to others? - and she for once had no idea how to react. Lying to him seemed....
Well, she hadn't lied to herself before, had she? Tried to forget some things, omit what would have harmed her - but that wasn't the same thing.
She had never hesitated for so long before - it was always a reflexive reaction, there was no need to think any more - and she knew any chance of sinking into the lie was slipping away.
So she didn't.
"I'd rather not tell you my name," she said sincerely. "But this is BlackGabumon. We came here to look for supplies." And that was it - if she wasn't lying, there was no need to say more than that.
This felt... strange. Not lying to Gear had been a betrayal, but she had been forced to it - he had been clearly willing to hurt her, and she had no choice but to try and ensure she came out unscathed. But this was different, because... she wasn't lying by choice. And there was the possibility of it not mattering, which was almost unbelievable. She had always been at risk, before, preventing others from learning anything about her so that she would be safe.
BlackGabumon was watching her, head tilted as if trying to figure something out. Maybe he was realizing just now who she was, and the bitter joke fate or destiny had set in stone by binding him to her. Or maybe he had always known.
It didn't really matter.

"I'd rather not tell you my name... But this is BlackGabumon. We came here to look for supplies." Hayate was starting to regret not speaking up and letting Strabimon handle things, for now the strangers knew his name but they didn't know hers. It was a little uncomfortable for some reason, however this and his 'regret' were mere ghosts of the real emotions; it was like there was a filter they couldn't get through almost, or they were muffled somehow. It had always been this way for him though and he didn't feel at all... Well he simply didn't feel anything towards this fact. The man didn't feel anything towards this at the moment, as it seemed really the only time that the one emotion he could feel towards it would come up.
Now wasn't the time to be moping about it anyway, but he couldn't get himself into the friendly facade he showed to everyone.
And that was when he finally realized it.
She was like him except she was managing to lie and cover it up, at least maybe hide it from Strabimon... But he could see right through it and see how Avari was. This was why he couldn't even act sociable, for as an emotional adapter he needed something to go off of from the person he was talking to; the girl wasn't giving off anything he could build off of. If Hayate was normal he'd probably be frustrated by this but as it was there was only a faint feeling of disappointment, since this meant he'd been robbed of being able to even feign the emotions he so wanted to feel for real one day. There was no point in feeling anything for the situation though or lying either.
Not when the person wouldn't even appreciate like he believed Avari wouldn't.
As a result any and all bit of genuine interest he might feel towards talking to another person was nonexistent, and he quite nearly walked away to just busy himself with looking around more. However Hayate knew how that might be interpreted but at the same time wasn't even sure Avari was capable of being offended... Probably not the best thing to be thinking but the man hardly had the guilt required to keep his thoughts from straying there. His eyes went to Strabimon a moment before returning to the girl and her digimon, as if he was trying to weigh the pros and cons of staying where he was and trying to talk when he'd most likely just keep silent. In the end though he decided to at least try and speak up, no matter how indifferent and uninterested he would seem to the others.
"I don't know if you'll find much more than dust here." Hayate said in his usual quiet and toneless way, something that made Strabimon frown. The rookie didn't entirely understand why his partner was having such issues today, though in all likelihood it would click with him soon enough; the only reason it hadn't yet was because he had never seen the man fail to raise a facade. It was odd for him to see his partner like this while interacting with other people, when he was so used to the routine of some sort of feeling always being manifested by his partner no matter what... Even if it was fake, it was still there sort of. Overall this situation was unnerving for the digimon, or maybe he was just simply creeped out by the mansion they were all currently standing in.
The place was deathly silent aside from their own voices and any little creaks something within the place would give occasionally... It was almost like something was walking around somewhere. Strabimon of course did not want his mind to go there at all, shaking his head faintly in an effort to disregard these sort of thoughts. Hayate on the other hand didn't even care for his current surroundings despite the creepy little noises he'd catch every now and then, not finding any reason to be nervous. Unless something actually posed a threat to them then he would remain unfeeling in reference to the dusty old mansion, and remain focus on the situation at hand.
How long said situation would last though, Hayate wasn't entirely sure.

She had been in abandoned houses before, but never one this big or, quite frankly, rather ominous. It wasn't that she was frightened by the décor, or the evident desolation. However, she could not hide that something felt... off here, like a faint echo of a door opening into darkness.
The dust served as proof that there was no enemy lying in wait, or at least, nothing corporeal. The house creaked, yes, but those could simply be sounds of age. There was no need to jump to the conclusion that restless spirits roamed here.
After all, the only ghost she had ever known of was herself - and no one would have ever understood what she meant.
"You're like me, aren't you? Or I'm like you." She said it calmly, even as she turned to study the room they recently had been in. A dining room? Nothing of use there, just as Hayate said. For once, she felt like she could afford to turn her back on someone. He wouldn't pose a risk because he wouldn't care enough. If she was in his place - she would have done the same. People were naturally curious, but that curiosity had been leached away by her own actions, and she doubted that Hayate was any different - in the end result, if not the circumstances.
"Even if there's nothing useful here... it'd be useful to stay for a little while. It's safe." In regards to current travellers, at least - other places would have ordinary people, threats and dangers because she couldn't trust them to be as impassive as she was.
BlackGabumon edged closer, the proximity unnerving enough that she turned back to see what he wanted. His pelt, striking in its monochromatic theme, was already dimmed with the dust that clung to everything here.
"This is not a good place to be in," he told her, eyes narrowed. "There is darkness here."
"I thought that was our speciality?" she asked, moving to examine the other doorways. Dust coated everything, and she covered her mouth as moving a door stirred up an impressive cloud of it. Her partner's only response was a growl as he followed her, always sticking to a precise distance. Avari might have been willing to almost ignore the other pair, but he wasn't - he constantly shifted to keep an eye on Hayate and Strabimon.
"Why are you here? I presume you aren't lost?"

"You're like me, aren't you? Or I'm like you."Hayate didn't even hesitate to give a small nod to Avari's words, not even caring to try and lie... What was the point when she knew? They were so painfully alike as far as the young man could see that he almost wanted to turn and leave the mansion; the near apathy that his emotionlessness brought him kept him from doing so though, however to be more exact there was no apathy keeping him there. In a confusing way absolutely nothing was keeping him there, as the total lack of feeling merely resulted in him staying where he was and just watching as she looked the seemingly archaic room over. The thought of attacking or posing any threat never occurred to him as the girl had expected, but not entirely for the same reasons... She hadn't proven to be a threat, there was no need for violence as far as he could see.
Strabimon on the other had seemed almost nervous by what was going on here and the fact that Avari had already called Hayate out on his blankness, mostly because his partner had responded with absolutely no feeling whatsoever. Not even sadness, which seemed to be the only thing he had managed to feel so far and what was usually his response to his emotionlessness being pointed out. It threw people for a loop on occasion considering what the person had pointed out, though barely anyone had been blunt enough to so much as breathe a word about it to Hayate. This was a preferred way of going through interactions with others, as the young man didn't particularly like to have his problem tossed back into his face as if he wasn't already aware of the fact he seemed nearly inhuman.
While Hayate couldn't feel angry about it, Strabimon definitely could and he wasn't entirely happy Avari had pointed it out like she had. It wasn't like it was done with malicious intent or anything like that, but even so the wolf-like digimon was still not at all pleased that topic had been brought about. The rookie managed to just give a little snort and cross his arms over his chest to express his displeasure, deciding any further reaction wasn't worth it. His partner didn't currently seem at all troubled by it so he supposed he could at least try to do the same in order to keep himself from causing some sort of confrontation... That was not something they needed."Why are you here? I presume you aren't lost?"Strabimon blinked at the questions and opened his mouth to answer, however he was stunned to find that his partner had quite readily and quickly stolen his thunder with stunning accuracy as he listened. "My partner led me to this place in hopes of scaring me somehow. He didn't entirely think it would work though, so I am partially lost on why we're here." Hayate spoke in that same flat and toneless voice as before, though somehow something about it seemed... Cold, like despite everything something in him resented being taken to this place. The rookie beside him gave the young man a somewhat concerned look, though it went unnoticed and his partner just turned to go over to the stairs. He tested the steps with his foot a moment before going ahead and sitting down despite the dust, dull eyes fixed on the door almost like there was nothing else to look at.
"Why are you here? You can't find a gate to go back through? Hayate asked quietly, his eyes finally going over to Avari. Strabimon wasn't sure if he should be happy or not that his partner was talking to the girl, supposing it was good to be social... But to watch it come about so automatically and emotionlessly bothered him a little. He thought for a moment about what BlackGabumon had said about there being darkness here, and he pretty much had to agree with the chill that pervaded through the heavy and foreboding air of the mansion. The rookie felt like there was a reason behind this but for the life of him he couldn't remember what it was, what the reason was for people rarely ever coming in here and everything.
Part of Strabimon said 'because no one ever comes out' but the other part asserted that this belief was silly and cliched; this was not a horror movie.

It was like looking into a mirror if she didn't bother with a pretense. She tended to avoid staring at herself, unless she was practising expressions, or by chance. When she didn't bother, and she saw herself... she couldn't even be unnerved by her reflection.
It was hopeless to try and change, after she had come so far. In a way, she knew that this... wasn't good. Being empty, without feelings - but this way, she didn't hurt. She didn't grieve, or worry, or fear. She could protect herself from the world, from everyone who could hurt her if they knew who she was.
So Hayate was... trying to feel fear? Or his partner was trying to coax him into feeling it. That was a strange thought. BlackGabumon had not expressed his concerns beyond the fact that he could not digivolve with her like this, and he had not attempted to do anything to "help" her. She could be grateful for that, at least. He knew to keep his distance from her. He never questioned her, never interfered with how she lived. If she had trusted him more - an impossibility - then she might have found it soothing, even peaceful for him to just accept her as he did.
"Why are you here? You can't find a gate to go back through?" Was it that obvious? She shrugged. "We haven't found it yet, and BlackGabumon didn't want me to sleep out in the open." Truthfully, neither did she - and not simply out of discomfort. Night had a... painful association, lately, even when she was in the real world. Especially in the real world - she had thought she had been safe, there. And she couldn't even forget properly, because -
BlackGabumon whined, and she realized first that he was staring at her, and then that she was tensed up. She forced herself to relax, and tried to banish the unpleasant memory of her name being crooned in her ear. "I'm fine," she whispered, already knowing he wouldn't believe it.
Trying to say something, rather than dwell on the past, was a struggle. "Do you know where the gate is?" At least that would make this trip worth it.

"We haven't found it yet, and BlackGabumon didn't want me to sleep out in the open."Hayate merely nodded to the response to show his acknowledgement towards it, also seeing the sense in not wanting to sleep outside; this world was dangerous and sleeping outside just seemed like an unintelligent decision. He wouldn't even do it, not out of fear or anything like that, but for self preservation... There was also the fact that Strabimon would never allow it either. The man looked back to the door after a moment or so as if it was now relevant or interesting again, though really he was just staring at it because he really wanted to leave actually and go home already. The fact still remained that he hadn't particularly been interested in coming to this place to begin with, and he didn't understand why his partner was trying to get him to feel afraid anyway when there had to be other emotions he could try and help him with.
Fear just seemed like an odd place to start with all of this to the man, after a moment his eyes going over to Strabimon who was still standing awkwardly where he'd been left. Hayate remained watching the digimon until his partner finally seemed to get the message to come and sit by him, the wolf-like creature sort of hurrying over and taking a seat in the dust beside the human. Once this had been accomplished though however his eyes just went straight back to the door as he continued to feel a need to leave this place, though he found that it almost seemed as if some invisible force was keeping him here. The young man was tired from being at work today, as he always seemed to be despite the fact that being a cook didn't seem like something that would tire one out to Strabimon; he was confused as to why it took so much out of his partner, but he never really questioned it.
By now though it was almost starting to show through his face, but with how blank and tired he seemed to start with it was pretty much impossible for anyone but Strabimon to tell. The rookie gave Hayate a little nudge on the shoulder as if to help wake him up a little more, met with not much more of a response than the human lifting his head up a touch more. He actually was starting to feel bad now for dragging his partner out here for something that might not even work so late in the day and everything, but the wolf-like monster just didn't seem like he knew how or if he should apologize for it; Hayate never seemed to understand apologies for some reason, another odd thing about the young man. Besides the human would just tell him not to feel bad about it and that would be the end of that, so he figured he just wouldn't say anything about it and just let things go."Do you know where the gate is?"The man's eyes went back to Avari at the question, his face giving away absolutely nothing as he thought about the question and the correct answer to give. "...No, not one that's near here... It would be dark before you got there." He said lowly as his eyes went back to the door again, shifting faintly as if he was uncomfortable where he was sitting or something. Strabimon noticed where his partner's eyes had gone yet again after answering the girl's question, realizing just how much his friend wanted to go home and sleep most likely. However now with the knowledge that it was nearly dark outside he wasn't entirely sure leaving this place was such a good idea, though there was still some nagging feeling in the back of his head about this old mansion.
The rookie wasn't sure what was bothering him though, and it was only serving to stress him out the longer he thought about it. Strabimon sighed a little and looked down to the dusty floor, unable to keep himself from noting the fact that Hayate didn't even look away from the door a little bit at the sigh. "...you really wanna leave don't you..." The digimon murmured quietly, looking up at his partner and watching as the young man shook his head a little but kept his eyes on the door. This only served to make him feel worse but even so Strabimon refrained from apologizing, since his partner wouldn't understand it and would most likely just question it and be confused by it. Therefore, there was no point.

BlackGabumon tilted his head, probably catching whatever the other Digimon had muttered - she didn't ask him to relay it, though, especially not when it would make it obvious that he had eavesdropped.
Avari wouldn't have blamed him for wanting to leave. If he had proven to actually want to know something about her, she probably would have had a much stronger inclination to turn around and walk away, shelter against the quickly falling night or not. Still, though his presence wasn't as much of a threat, it made this encounter no easier.
Usually, she was rather skilled at reading people, well enough to predict potential reactions to how she acted - and that helped her decide which lies to use. However, with him...
She couldn't quite bear to look at him. Whenever she did, her eyes slide away - she found herself staring at Strabimon instead, because at least he was emotional, normal. She hadn't expected to see anyone like her, not really. She knew she was... corrupted or dark or at least different, but there had been a sort of solace in the loneliness inherent to that. She was alone and different and special, and... suddenly she was not. At the same time, it didn't frighten her, but... staring at someone so empty was difficult. That same uniqueness was difficult for even her to understand, and she knew it was probably not good what was happening to her, or what she had let happen, or - or something like that.
She could avoid it in herself. She could not avoid the similarities between them now, or how empty he looked. Not even cold, or aloof. Just blank, like she was.
In the end, this encounter was utterly meaningless. They would part ways - probably quite soon - and neither of them would matter enough to the other for anything to happen. They would probably never see each other again. She would be a non-entity to him, as he was to her.
Wasn't that what she wanted? To disappear, in that sense?
He had told her his name - or well, his partner had - and it doubtless meant much less to him, but...
"Avari. My name is Avari," she said, already wishing she could bite back the words somehow - now it was permanent.
If he didn't care, then she would risk nothing anyways, right? It wasn't... the same.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Fortunately he wasn't Jack, because he really didn't play very often. No vacation, no sick leave, no social life, no wife or girlfriend or pet rabbit waiting for him at home.. 'all work and no play' were pretty much the words he lived by. It wasn't explicitly intentional, no--work was just so interesting, and people, well, people just weren't worth his time.
If all that was true, though... why the hell was he strolling up to the Grey Lord's Mansion? He had a number of excuses--he was checking its structural integrity, he'd heard that the walls could talk, he was fleeing the impending zombie apocalypse--but to be honest none of them really rung true for him. It had probably been the way Hagurumon had looked at it, her happy manner seeming tinged by curiosity at the sight of it as they'd been walking around, looking for certain I'd-tell-you-but-then-I'd-have-to-kill-you items that were necessary for 'the job'. Or it had been the way the rising moon had glanced off the roof of the immense building, or in the way the door was left oh-so-invitingly shut tight. It could have been anything, so he convinced himself there wasn't a specific reason for sauntering up and slipping in through the door, Hagurumon doing the same directly behind him.
The second he was past the threshold, he heard the voices. Maybe the walls really did talk? No, no, they were talking about mortal things like sleeping and digital gates--digidestineds, then. Two, if he was correct (and he usually was, especially when it came to voices). What to do, what to do about this peculiar pair? Well more of a double-pair, if the digimon were involved as he thought they would be. Hm.. well, it wouldn't do to dawdle and hum and haw in the doorway, would it? Of course not! Now was the time for action, and action was the time for now!
He walked over to the source of the voices, finding a whole bunch of dark all wrapped up in for figures. Two of them were clearly digimon, and of the remainders one was obviously a boy and the other female. Beyond that, though, they didn't seem to be anything special. Not that anyone ever did, not even his own reflection. Nothing particularly memorable, but that was human beings for you. With Hagurumon bobbing silently in the air behind him, he slipped on a friendly grin and spoke. "Is this place popular or what?

"Avari. My name is Avari."Hayate really hadn't expected her to give a name after saying she'd prefer not to, but any surprise he might of had didn't show... Simply because there wasn't any. It wasn't because he had expected her to say her name or anything, it was just that there was nothing in him to spur that particular emotion forward; he could feel surprise but just barely, and with nothing to amplify the faint ghosts of emotions or anything to base his reactions off of he simply had nothing to display. Thus his face remained blank at the new information that was Avari's name, merely giving a small nod to show that he had heard her and therefore now knew her name. There was no friendly 'it's nice to meet you' or even at the very least a smile to accompany the nod, there was merely a movement that held no emotion or anything to it... It just seemed like an automatic response if anything.
Strabimon noted his partner's reaction and couldn't help but feel troubled by it, given the fact that this was still very odd to him to see Hayate acting like this. Even at home and just around him the man was rather emotionally lifeless, but it was never this bad... Never never this bad, not to the point where the other seemed cold and not just blank. The rookie felt he had every right to be alarmed given this fact and thus Hayate was no longer the only one of the pair who wanted to leave, but the digimon knew that it was too dangerous to leave this place now that he was positive night had fallen. He wished that he had just waited for a day where they could come here earlier instead of late in the afternoon like they had today, at least then they wouldn't have to spend the night in this dusty old place; not to me mention the fact that the place was rather creepy, and he really wouldn't be terribly surprised if the mansion was hiding a dark secret or two.
Maybe they could leave, maybe he would be enough to keep Hayate safe until they found that nearest gate that the human had mentioned earlier... But despite all his confidence and sense of worth as a digimon, Strabimon could not in good conscience lead him from this place. On the off chance that something bad happened and he couldn't protect his partner, he knew that he would never forgive himself for such a thing. Therefore he quietly resigned himself to sitting here on these old wooden steps with his partner despite their collective need to leave, giving a very faint sigh and resting his head in his palm; this was all his fault, and he'd feel much worse if something happened within these old walls to put the man beside him in danger. No nothing had happened but with the foreboding feel of the place, the wolf-like digimon felt that was only a matter of time and soon they'd be fighting off vampires or something.
...Actually that sounded silly... Ghosts would be more likely.
The rookie nearly gave a faint laugh at his own thoughts when he suddenly felt his partner tense up beside him, making him look towards him in a questioning manner. Hayate didn't look back at him though, his eyes staying fixed on the door as if he expected something to come through it suddenly... And after a few moments it turned out that he was right. He stayed tense as if immediately expecting a threat, and Strabimon felt himself tense up a little as well; this was it, this was that bad thing that he had been expecting to happen since they first walked into this creepy old place. Of course it wasn't the threat he had expected and the possibility this wasn't a threat remained, but all the same the digimon felt like he should be on guard so he was."Is this place popular or what?Hayate looked Avery over quietly despite the greeting, seeming as if he were trying to judge whether or not the newcomer would turn out to mean them harm or not. He could see the Hagurumon floating like a phantom behind the other, though she was far from frightening; she was small and looked like a bunch of gears stuck together, nothing visibly threatening there. Of course the man knew by now not to underestimate any digimon of any kind and therefore remained on guard, despite the fact for all appearances neither she nor her partner seemed to pose any threat to them... But he knew that things were rarely, if ever exactly as they seemed. He figured it was better to be on guard and be wrong than be relaxed and be right, otherwise there could be more problems than necessary when it came to keeping themselves alive here.
"Who are you?" Hayate asked almost immediately, even moving to stand up as if it would help in warning Avery off if he was indeed a threat. With his darkly colored eyes, height, and rather fit build he himself could be quite the threat if things were indeed to go that direction... Though it wasn't like he wanted to fight, not unless it was absolutely necessary. Strabimon stood as well as if he seemed to think that he should be standing alongside his partner, or maybe it was just that he was trying to do the same thing as the man beside him; make it clear he was no pushover. The rookie nearly said something to make up for his partner's less than friendly greeting but he found that his tongue appeared quite tied, instead giving sort of a little wave and a nearly apologetic look.
He still didn't know how to handle how Hayate was acting. The Fountain - Pendulum

The meeting might have stalled until either of them left, if not for the entrance of another. BlackGabumon was the first to react to the two who entered, stepping forward and tense as if expecting a fight. He usually didn't bother with such extremes of guardedness - the atmosphere of the mansion must have been truly different from the norm to set him off so quickly.
Would Hayate say something? He was a risk, and with the presence of someone else, she found herself caught in a rather familiar sense of fear. She had told him. So what if he was like her in a way, and there was little to fear from him? That didn't ensure he would shut up. He could easily tell anyone, and he knew and -
She needed to calm down. Her partner was being cautious enough as it was - if she tensed up, she would ruin any chances of lying now.
Turning to the newcomers, she smiled, one hand reaching out to BlackGabumon to pat his shoulder soothingly. He, probably wisely, did not take the fake hint to relax - he was used to her lies by now, and she had no intention of getting him to stand down at this time.
"I guess it must be! Are you exploring and looking for treasure too?" she asked, slouching slightly as if there really was nothing to fear. "We thought there'd be some pretty awesome loot here or something, but it's all dusty! I'm really glad I don't have allergies... Oh, where are my manners? I'm Shion and this is BlackGabumon. It's nice to meet you!"
If Hayate said nothing, then the only danger was the partner - and maybe Strabimon would be intelligent enough to keep quiet and not give anything away.
Why had she been so stupid?

snake in the grass, watch your feet, let me pass--and the mice in the walls, they find joy in it all. if there's a god that could save me, I'd ask him to open the skies and do it now but it's just a chemical I'm not a snake, I'm just falling apart again. liar, liar, pants on fire, hanging from a telephone wire... How dare she lie? How dare she lie to him? He chuckled at the sheer hilarity of it all. Ah, people... despicable, the lot of them, up to and of course including Avery himself. This 'Shion' (if that was her real name, which it probably wasn't) was as annoying as they came, what with this whole falsehood business. And she wasn't even doing a good job of covering up whatever had been going on, not if he could tell. Avery was terrible at reading people, if only because he couldn't remember what they were supposed to look like long enough to have anything to compare a current expression to. He was, however, quite adept at reading the pitches and nuances of a voice. Though the voices he'd heard on his way into the house had been muted, he'd heard a very distinctive kind of.. hollow tension. There was no way that the bubbly Shion could have been the same girl who had been speaking with the boy across from her. The question was, though, why would she lie? What could she gain from telling falsehoods to a stranger? Did he really look like such a threat? That would be a treat, people usually underestimated him. His chuckling grew slightly in volume before cutting off entirely--didn't want to appear the madman any more than he already did, no. The pressing matter now was coming up with a suitable lie to match the girl's own. Who would he be today? He could be an old hand, an all-around good guy who was searching for company in this lonely world of monsters. But, no, that didn't sound like very much fun at all. Perhaps he could be the bumbling student, his first time in the digiworld, just looking for someone to help him get back home because, after all, he had a report due the next morning. That would fit with his medical bag and lab coat, yes--that is if he was a medical student. But why shouldn't he be? In fact, it sounded like a splendid idea. He added a note of uncertainty to his voice and began the show. "I'm Orson... I've.. I'm not really sure how I got here. Do you guys know much about this place?" An embarrassed smile, a shifting of weight from foot to foot. Then he blinked, as if only now processing the girl's words. "Do you really think there could be treasure here?" He ignored the dust comment, trying not to think about it much. As it was, he wanted to run home and douse himself in sterilizer. He didn't need to dwell any more on it. "Oh, and.. that's apparently 'Hagurumon'. I don't know why it's following me." That should do it, should give the appearance of a clueless guy well enough. Well enough, because he didn't care enough to try and fool them perfectly.

Hayate listened in silence as Avari lied; he hadn't trusted her to start with really, though he hadn't expect her to give a false name like that... She seemed completely different too, how was she doing that? He knew that it was all an act but even he couldn't do that, and he couldn't go off of anything that either of the other two seemed to be feeling, because he felt like they were both lying. His eyes traveled away from 'Shion' to the man who had entered as he waited to see what he would say, waited to see if he was a threat. Though it wasn't like he could be very threatened by them, or at least that was how he felt; he could get away if he needed to, or he could fight back well enough if that was necessary. He was hoping that it wouldn't be though, as really he wasn't in the mood nor in the physical state for fighting; he wasn't sure anyone but Strabimon could tell how tired he was.
His partner was watching the other two as about as closely as him, the wolf-like digimon's eyes staying on Avari and Avery. He didn't even think to point out that the girl was lying because that was her business, if she wanted to give a false name and everything then she could... It just gave him more of an excuse not to like her anyway. The rookie directed his attention to the newcomer as he waited for a response from him, though he wasn't sure how relevant it would be since for whatever reason he felt like it would be another lie; this place had suddenly become a house of liars for the most part, though he felt maybe he was making judgements too quickly. However as the man with the glasses finally spoke and introduced himself as 'Orson', Strabimon's eyes drifted away from him and up to Hayate's face as if to see what he seemed to think about this... Though his partner was so hard to read at the moment.
Hayate was as straight faced as ever but even so there was a glimmer of distrust in his eyes as he watched Avery, and he wasn't so sure he felt like giving his name out and hoped Strabimon felt the same. It wasn't really like him to stay silent like he was but this was how he had reacted to Avari as well, not saying a word to the other man and just quietly sitting back down since he seemed to feel like there was no threat... For the moment anyway. He almost felt like calling 'Orson' out on his lie but he also felt as if he didn't know enough to actually say that, just watching him with an almost dull expression like he didn't particularly care for the situation. In truth he really didn't, and he almost felt like just leaving these two liars to each other so he could finally go home and sleep; that was why his expression seemed dull, not only because he had nothing to display on it but also because he would most likely be asleep by now if he were home.
"Uh... I'd introduce ourselves but... I feel my partner wouldn't appreciate it at the moment." Strabimon said after a few moments, watching as Hayate lowered his head a bit and kind of stared at the floor. The rookie was feeling even worse all the time for bringing his partner here, especially since he hadn't expected people to come in here like this. Hopefully his partner would perk up or something but he really didn't think that would happen, in fact it was more likely that Hayate would fall asleep where he was sitting on the steps. He was starting to think about leaving again, but it still didn't seem like a good idea. (ooc; sorry for the short-ish post of nothing, I didn't really know what to write ;A; )
