Of the few places he knew in Odaiba, the park was his favorite. There was something pleasantly simple about walking around the colorful playsets, the undeniable urge to smile as he saw their fun--all of it soured by the knowledge that they were all going to be hurt by someone, and soon if they hadn't been already. Whether it was bullies, parents, cruel teachers.. there was always someone who spoiled everything. In fact, James considered himself such a person. He punched and kicked and rubbed salt into wounds with the rest of them and, in all honesty, always had. He likely always would, too, despite how he tried to act to the contrary.
And how he did try. He didn't want his partner to see him fight, ever, and had been managing to pick fights purely at school. EbiBurgermon somehow always believed that James had fallen down. It was this essential trust and goodness that the boy wanted to preserve in the digimon, scared that the second EbiBurgermon saw him fight, they'd lose all trust in each other. He shivered a little, the smallest twinge of guilt plucking at his spine. But then it was gone and his resolve was firm again. He looked about the empty park, seeing it as it always was in the daytime--full of life--and almost laughing at how different from himself that description was.
The laughter and shouting were gone, though, as dusk had fallen on the city. As much as it ever did, anyway. The lights and the pollution that brightened the sky made it quite difficult to tell what time it was, and he certainly couldn't afford a watch. His phone was only for emergencies, and besides he hadn't charged it in months. He'd be pretty much screwed if his blood sugar decided to take a turn for the worse, come to think of it.. but he didn't particularly care, though. He wasn't here to think about that sort of thing. No, he was here to relax and, if the opportunity presented itself, pick a fight. As per usual.
He wasn't sure why he wanted to punch someone so desperately, but he did. And with Upamon tucked into his book bag, asleep and unable to witness a thing it seemed like the perfect opportunity. If only someone would just show up... someone always did, though, if he waited long enough. There was always some shady character prowling about the streets at night. He took a seat at one of the benches and simply waited, smiling the slightest bit. Someone would come and he'd pick a fight and he'd lose and he'd have to try to keep his blood sugar from spinning wildly out of control.... as per usual. (( ooc: please wait for Jinx to post! )) [/sup]

It wasn't too unheard of for Hayate to go on evening walks, but still it was rather rare for him to be out of his apartment around this time of day unless he needed to be. This time however there didn't appear to be a reason oddly enough, the twenty-three year old just walking through the park with his face as blank as ever. Beneath this expression there was nothingness, no emotions or opinions whatsoever in response to his surroundings. To anyone else this might seem eerie, or simply not right... However this was how he had always been, this was entirely normal to him.
Too normal in complete honesty.
It almost dredged up pretty much the only emotion he could feel as he dwelled on this, the sadness bubbling up in him like a slow boil in hot water. Hayate closed his eyes a moment as he paused, giving a light sigh before opening them again and gazing around blankly. An exasperated sigh issued from the space on his shoulder, and his eyes were drawn to the small raccoon-like digimon who was currently resting there. "Jeez mate... Could you look any happier?" Kapurimon inquired sarcastically, rolling his eyes as his partner just stared at him questioningly.
"Right, I forgot... You still can't recognize sarcasm." The digimon laughed for whatever reason after saying this, something that would probably seem rude to anyone else. However Hayate merely gave a faint 'Hm' in response, not seeming to take any offense to his partner's laughter. He nearly envied him for a moment but... Mostly it was just good to see his perpetual state of emotionlessness hadn't put a damper on things. Kapurimon always seemed to be in a good mood no matter what, something the in training hoped would flick some sort of switch in his partner that would make him feel something.
Hayate blinked as Kapurimon's expression changed, as if he had come across something surprising. "...What is it?" Even with how flat his voice sounded, the digimon swore somewhere in there he could hear curiosity. The in training took a few moments before answering, sniffing at the air a little before looking off some distance in front of them. "Dunno... I swear there's another digimon up ahead... Like that guy there has it." He explained, his partner turning his head to look where Kapurimon was.
"...Interesting." Hayate murmured, though he really didn't sound like he cared in the slightest. His partner was confident that somewhere in there that the human had some genuine interest, otherwise why would he keep going the way he was? Maybe he was finally starting to show some improvement, though to Kapurimon things like interest or curiosity weren't entirely what he was going for; he was aiming for laughs and smiles, something he had never seen Hayate really do. Even so he would take this as a small victory... He hadn't had one in a while.

"You're so SLOW. Hurry up!"
Samantha found herself out of breath, pausing momentarily to lean over and rest her hands on her knees, taking a few quick breaths while she could. For a little creature with no arms or legs... Gummymom sure did move quickly. "Gummy....mon...wait!" Sammy shouted as quietly as she could as her partner began to run off too far. This was definitely the last time she let her partner out of her arms while in public, definitely the last time. Sammy didn't know why Gummymon felt the need to do this all the time... like she was trying to prove something by going off on her own and getting into trouble. Maybe she just wanted attention and Sammy should ignore it, but it was hard for her to just turn the other cheek.
With one last breath Sammy straightened herself and went after Gummymon again, though this time in a quick walk rather than a run. Sammy wondered if she took it easy, then maybe her partner would as well. This wasn't a race after all, she had no reason to be running after her. Though... god she worried so much.
Gummymon on the other hand, seemed thrilled to be off on her own. It was annoying to be cramped in a bag or stuck in her partner's arms all the time. She wanted to be running around like everyone else! ...Not stuck in a bag like some little dog or something. So, when she has sensed another digimon ahead, she knew she wasn't going to pass up such an opportunity. No way was she going to sit here and do nothing while there was another nearby. Who knows, maybe Gummymon could finally show off just how able she really was.
"Ah HA!"
Gummymon shouted loudly as she hopped right up behind James, little round ears straight up in the air. This guy had to have a digimon, she knew one was here! "YOU, squishy human, where's your digimon? I know they're here! SHOW YOURSELF!"
Hopping in place a few times, Gummymon puffed herself up a bit to seem bigger. Pft. This was piece of cake! She couldn't wait to see the look on James face when he turned around to see such a DANGEROUS creature standing right behind hi-
"He..HEY! Let go of mee!"
Sammy snatched up Gummymon as quickly as she could, restraining the little green digimon as it gave a small snort in retaliation to her actions. Her cheeks were red with embarrassment, stepping back and looking down. "I'm so sorry! Ignore her, uh ... I mean, this...this...erh..."
Sammy realized she had no idea how to explain what Gummymon was, not knowing James himself had a digimon partner. This was exactly the reason she wouldn't let Gummymon out of her sight... and now she wished she had actually ran to get here rather than walk.

"YOU, squishy human, where's your digimon? I know they're here! SHOW YOURSELF!"
He didn't even flinch at the shouting, though it was right next to his head. The voice was too high for.. whatever it was... to be very large, certainly not worth fighting. And he wouldn't want to hurt something small, that would be like hurting Upamon--something James would never, never do. But the thing had mentioned digimon... he didn't turn his head, didn't want to hope that a digimon other than Upamon was here. He had to admit, he had a soft spot for the things.
"I'm so sorry! Ignore her, uh ... I mean, this...this...erh..."
He looked straight at the girl, a small smile on his face. "It's fine. Your digimon was right, by the way, I do have a partner of my own..." He nodded at the book bag, an almost friendly smile crossing his mouth. "He's sleeping, though." The boy drew the bag closer to himself, setting it on his lap in a protective gesture. It was clear that he didn't want anyone to wake his sleeping partner. "I'm James." He nodded at the girl and her digimon, a little bit annoyed that he wasn't going to be able to fight them; there was no way he'd fight a girl and her helpless digimon.
He looked around a bit and, as his eyes adjusted to the growing darkness, saw the second person in the park. He pushed the book bag off of his lap and onto the bench beside him, almost knowing that the new guy would be a good opponent. He called out to the figure in the darkness just to be sure they couldn't walk past. "Hello there!" He motioned to the figure, trying to get him (James was assuming it was a guy, they were just too tall to be a girl) to come over to where he sat.
Some part, perhaps even a large part of him knew that he was making a very bad choice, but the rest of him didn't care--and that was enough for him to make whatever bad choices that would come next. That didn't help ease the excited, nervous butterflies in his stomach, though.. he sighed faintly. What the hell was he doing? Getting into fights with random strangers? Oh yeah, such great behavior. Not that he'd ever been a model citizen, though.

"YOU, squishy human, where's your digimon? I know they're here! SHOW YOURSELF!"Hayate had to stop as he noticed there was a commotion of some sort up ahead, the Kapurimon on his shoulder seeming confused somehow by it. To the little digimon this seemed like it was either an act of boldness... Or just blatant stupidity; after all they weren't supposed to be bouncing around and shouting at people. Then again here he was, out in the open on his partner's shoulder so maybe he didn't have that much room to talk. After a moment though he interrupted his own thoughts to try and get his human to keep moving forward, via a little nudge to the side of his head.
The young man blinked and looked away from two individuals up ahead, a vague look of questioning on his face. "Are we gonna keep moving or are you gonna keep gawking?" The in training asked, though there really wasn't a sense or urgency or anything behind the words... It was nothing more than a harmless question. In all honesty Kapurimon was not at all in a hurry to get back home, as he had been locked up in Hayate's apartment all day long while the human had been at work. The in training would be perfectly content to just stay out here for the next hour, however as his partner started forward again he realized he wouldn't be so lucky as to have that happen.
Hayate was pretty much the exact opposite of his partner, as he really did want to get home; really he was sort of tired after a day at work. The only reason he'd gone out in the first place he supposed was that it was only fair after Kapurimon had been inside all day, despite the fact he had been a little unsure about it since he needed to keep the digimon out of the public eye. He absently placed his hands in the pockets of his jacket, already having decided he would most likely go straight to bed once he was home. Hopefully nothing would come between him and his straight shot home, as he felt he might be too tired to truly adapt to any social interactions at the moment."Hello there!"Both Hayate and Kapurimon blinked in mild surprise as James called out to them, the human part of the pair glancing over somewhat blankly. "Looks like we're staying out a bit later, huh? The in training commented, looking the other two humans over as best as he could in the growing darkness. From his partner's lack of response he could tell the human wasn't entirely pleased with this turn of events, but hoped that he wouldn't be rude enough to just keep walking. The little digimon nearly gave a tiny sigh of relief as Hayate finally decided to turn and go closer, despite the fact he was tired.
However the young man's thoughts were rather different from Kapurimon's, mainly focused on the fact that these two strangers seemed to have digimon... And he also found it a little odd that he had been called over. He didn't know what was going to happen or what these people were like; the girl seemed like she was harmless enough but something about the boy bothered him. Hayate honestly didn't know what it was, but he had to hope he wouldn't be finding out. For now though he'd have to focus on being sociable, focus on trying to be the emotional adapter he so called himself.
"Hello." His tone was polite and friendly, even though Kapurimon knew beneath this there was nothing. It was sad to him to see this when he knew what he did about Hayate, and he knew that his partner felt the same. However now was not the time to dwell on that, now was the time to speak and be friendly; the chance to talk with others was always an exciting one for him. The in training smiled to the others before introducing himself and his partner, since Hayate had neglected to do so himself.
"Hey, I'm Kapurimon and this is my partner Hayate!" The digimon's voice seemed to have more feeling to it than his partner's somehow, despite the fact that Hayate had sounded quite genuine.

Sammy blinked as James spoke, honestly surprised. That means he was a digidestined too! For whatever reason, this fact made her smile, since the only other people she was ever around were mostly A.I.R. members or...
...oh.
The girl's smile dwindled some as she realized James just might be another hollow one - someone who bought a fake partner for money. She felt a little uneasy at the thought, as if he would somehow figure out her little secret and snitch on her. ...Okay, maybe she was just over thinking this. Even if James had bought his partner, there was no way he could know Sammy herself was a real digidestined. And for all she knew, he was too. Ack... why was she even thinking about this so much?
"Oh... OH! It's so weird to meet someone else with a partner."
Eh...maybe not her best choice of words, but she smiled anyway, hugging Gummymon a little more as the little green digimon squirmed a small bit. The in-training wasn't entirely fond of being restrained like this, huffing a bit and looking up at James, speaking over Samantha's voice when she was about to introduce them both. "Sleeping? That is so pathetic, digimon aren't suppose to sleep, they're suppose to protect their human partners."
Sammy's face reddened again at her partner's outburst, biting her lip as she fought out words to make up for what was said. After all, she didn't want to seem rude... which was hard when her partner seemed to be constantly talking down on others. "Oh god, I'm...I'm sorry. She's just... ignore her."
Gummymon seemed ready to have a conniption fit at this, puffing out and about to give Sammy a piece of her mind when she paused at the sound of someone else's voice, blinking and looking over to see another person with a digimon. At the sight of Hayate and Kapurimon she seemed to forget about James and his supposed sleeping partner at the moment, ears perking as she immediately gazed at the in-training on Hayate's shoulder.
Samantha could see the wheels turning in her partner's head just by looking at her, speaking up fairly quickly before Gummymon could yell out something that would inevitably end up embarrassing her somehow. Gummymon really had no tact... and Sammy constantly had to make up for it. "H..Hi! I see you have a partner too. Um...My name's Samantha, or Samm... and this is Gummymon." Sammy smiled at both pairs after speaking, petting Gummymon's head a bit as if to calm her, though if anything it only seemed to agitate the little in-training more. However, she said nothing for the time being, just withdrawing into Sammy's hold.

"Oh... OH! It's so weird to meet someone else with a partner."
What a nice person. Even if she was a little flustered, James felt glad to be around someone normal.. even if he was about to ruin everything with a fight. Why the hell was he doing this again? He wasn't starved for attention, in fact he much preferred to be alone, or with Upamon--he hated being around people, hated school and crowds and parties, but apparently none of that mattered tonight. Especially not the fact that Upamon could wake up at any moment and see him fighting.
He sighed, trying to push his worries away and maintain the smile on his face, though it was slowly slipping. He did manage to keep the friendly tone, though, as he responded to Sammy. "Yeah, it really is... I actually think you're the first one I've met." He glanced over to the approaching figure and was surprised to find that the other guy had a digimon too.
"Hey, I'm Kapurimon and this is my partner Hayate!" A small twinge of guilt flicked through his gut at the thought of fighting this Hayate guy, at the thought of the little Kapurimon having to watch, but the thought was quickly banished. He sat up a little straighter, cautiously glancing down at his book bag as if looking too hard at it would wake its sleeping occupant. "..I'm James, and my partner Upamon is asleep in my bag." He nodded his head in the direction of the bag.
Then he started trying to come up with ways to piss the guy (or the Kapurimon) off. It wasn't especially easy and it wasn't especially comfortable, seeing as everyone was being pretty friendly with each other at the moment, but he was sure he'd think of something eventually. Or maybe he wouldn't, maybe he'd just sit there and talk and actually manage to have a normal evening for once. But he doubted it.
Sooner or later he'd wind up saying the wrong thing, whether or not it was on purpose, and someone would get pissed and then James would get pissed and then blows would fly and he'd be left in the dust scrambling for his emergency candy bar or something. What a lovely existence. "So, what are you guys doing out here at night?"

"H..Hi! I see you have a partner too. Um...My name's Samantha, or Samm... and this is Gummymon."He regarded the girl in silence, nodding to her a little to acknowledge her greeting. Hayate was finding that social interaction may be a little more difficult than usual at the moment, hoping that his partner would maybe sense this and trying to make up for it maybe... He always seemed to be ready to do so, which was troubling most of the time since usually he wasn't supposed to talk lest he gain negative attention. Any attention was negative though when you were harboring a tiny little raccoon monster in a metal helmet though, unless the other people had a little creature of their own. Since Sammy and James both seemed to have partners it seemed perfectly alright to have Kapurimon out and in plain sight like this, the young man actually sort of relieved by the fact he was with people he didn't have to hide his digimon from.
Kapurimon was honestly happy about this as well, happy that there were other digidestined that he could be out in front of and actually communicate with. Unlike his partner he was too busy feeling like this to even consider James wasn't one to trust, but with his lack of emotions it was nearly all Hayate was focused on. He wouldn't let it show of course though, he never did when he didn't trust someone or had any negative thoughts towards them; the negative thoughts were few and far in between but still occurred. So there was absolutely nothing on the outside to tip of anyone where he stood with James at the moment, though he would of course give the boy the benefit of the doubt, give him a chance."..I'm James, and my partner Upamon is asleep in my bag."Well he seemed polite enough, but Hayate didn't feel entirely comfortable still... Like he felt like something bad was going to start up. This might just be him being overly cautious but he couldn't entirely help it; he had nothing but the negative things to focus on. Well maybe that was kind of overdoing it or being over dramatic, and Hayate was just being a little paranoid of something. The young man figured it was just because he was tired and his nerves were a little shot from having to adapt all day long... He should have taken a little nap or something before taking Kapurimon outside."So, what are you guys doing out here at night?"The question snapped Hayate out of his thoughts and he found he was relieved by the distraction, able to refocus on his efforts at adapting. However it was Kapurimon who sprung to answering the question first, but the young man would make it a goal of sorts to get the next one. "Well I've been locked in a stuffy apartment all day so Hayate was kind enough to take me out for a bit." The little digimon explained, glancing at Sammy a moment for whatever reason... He supposed it was time to turn on the charm. "You know he put off sleep after a hard day at work just to make sure I got some fresh air? He's so tired too!" Kapurimon exclaimed, making his partner rub the back of his neck a little as he feigned some sort of embarrassment; he knew that was probably how he should feel at this statement.
Hayate didn't understand what Kapurimon was trying to do exactly with statements like this, any ideas of it being to make him look good not even coming to him. "It's not a big deal Kapurimon..." He said lowly, his nearly lightless eyes going off to the side to make the embarrassment more believable. Yes he was essentially acting, lying to these nice people but... It was all he could do. He wasn't about to just act like his normal blank self, it didn't seem right somehow at all.

Sammy looked between the two as they spoke, finding herself fidgeting a little as if somewhat awkward or uncomfortable. It wasn't exactly that she was... mostly just a little shy over the fact that she was standing here with two complete strangers and their partners. ...And she... well, she would also be lying to herself if she didn't admit both of the two boys were a little cu- AH! No, no, why was she thinking that? The girl shook her head just faintly, smiling at the two of them and holding onto Gummymon as her partner insisted on wiggling out of her grip.
"I was just taking Gummymon out too," Sammy responded to James' question before her gaze went up to Kapurimon, the digimon actually getting the faintest of giggles out of her for whatever reason. She didn't even know why, but something about the digimon seemed to amuse her... along with his partner's reaction to him. If Hayate was acting, Sammy was oblivious to it, taking his faux embarrassment as something real and finding it was just making her fidget that much more.
"Girl, what's with you? Let me go already!" Gummymon wiggled as she shouted to her partner, ears flopping up and down as if the action would somehow aid in her escape. Sammy sighed and looked down the the in-training in her arms, mumbling something through her teeth to try and get her partner to settle down. Gummymon only frowned, huffing rather audibly and sinking into Sammy's arms some, "Don't you give me that look."
Despite the response, the digimon settled at this, looking up at Kapurimon with a sort of harsh glare before the look was redirected toward James, still a little miffed with the fact his partner was sleeping. "Yanno, I actually don't think I believe you have a partner! You seem like the kinda guy who'd lie for the hell of it," The in-training spoke before Sammy could really do anything about it, gazing at him almost challengingly. She knew he did have a partner, since she could sense it... however it was too much fun to just cause trouble.
Samantha on the other hand wasn't enjoying her partner's behavior any more than she had been a few moments ago, gnawing on her bottom lip. She might have said something in contradiction to Gummymon's statement, but she didn't want to keep repeating herself over and over. Maybe she should just leave? The girl wasn't sure... Gummymon was acting far more impish that Sammy found herself comfortable with... especially around others.
She ended up saying nothing however, afraid of somehow insulting them more than her partner may have already. They all seemed friendly enough, she just hoped Gummymon's behavior wouldn't change that.

anything left to say? You've been down so long you've forgotten to believe--You've been kicked around, they got you on your knees. Gonna sit there in defeat? You better suck it up boy and get up off the ground! You forget they made you bleed? They kicked you like a dog when you were down. He could feel it, feel how he was neither trusted nor accepted--at least, not by Hayate or Gummymon. He couldn't tell what the remaining two felt, but he wasn't sure he needed to. One half of a partnership disliking or distrusting him was certainly enough to count, right? This could be fuel for either fighting or slinking off, and he was no longer sure which he'd rather do. He'd never been all that decisive, and while on the one hand a good fight would be an outlet for whatever pent-up aggression he had, on the other he didn't especially enjoy having to go to the hospital for dangerously low blood sugar.
Decisions aside, he'd never been very good at being social in general. His personality was simply abrasive--in other words, he wasn't exactly a people person by any definition. He scolded himself for making introductions, knowing that a fight would be a lot easier if they were all just nameless strangers in the dark. But the longer he stalled the more likely it was that Upamon was going to wake up, so...
He cleared his throat, about to fling some insults and incite conflict when Gummymon spoke and completely derailed his train of thought. He blinked at the digimon, uncomprehending for a moment, before his stare turned icy. False threats and blustering insults were no longer needed; he had real fuel for anger now. "Do I also seem like the kind of guy who'd wring your little green neck 'for the hell of it'? Because that's what's going to happen if you don't take it back." His tone was iron, combative.
He glanced protectively at the bag in which Upamon slept, not knowing he'd probably gone too far. But that was what he'd wanted in the first place, right? Besides... nobody would be would be accusing Upamon of not existing, not while he was still breathing.
For whatever reason, he was absurdly protective of his tiny digimon. It didn't really make sense and he didn't quite understand why, but it was true nonetheless. He was, in fact, protective enough to attack a defenseless digimon over something that wasn't even a direct threat. A little too protective, probably (definitely), but James honestly enjoyed having something to take care of other than himself.
