APPEARANCE.
He tries to appear unassuming and nearly as forgettable as he views everyone else, with a good amount of success. His height is pretty average (5'9") and he's rather slim with barely any muscle. He may be a little pale but that never killed anybody, right? His somewhat unkempt hair and thickly framed glasses give him a sort of bookish look, as if there's no place he'd rather be than the library. He has a studious air of concentration about him, probably in the way he always wears a small frown around people.
As a self-described man of science, Avery is never caught without his customary white labcoat. Ever. He'd wear white at a wedding, white at a funeral, white at somebody's divorce trial--that labcoat is like his best friend and his security blanket. It also has extra-large pockets sewn into the lining in various places, perfect for keeping miscellaneous products he's testing. Despite all the extra pocket space, Avery often carries a medical bag for anything else he might need.
PERSONALITY.
Avery is almost obssessively clean. This habit bloomed first when he was in the hospital recovering from a head injury, but it only got worse from there. He carries around antibacterial wipes and spray, and washes his hands perhaps a little too often. It's pointless to tell him that these tendencies only promote the growth and strengthening of bacteria--Avery cares less about actual cleanliness than the idea of it. If he feels clean, he's happy.
Avery has a brain disorder, prosopagnosia (or the inability to recognize faces). This means that if someone he should know instantly--a colleague, his father, himself--walks up to him, he will not be able to recognize them by face alone. He can sometimes get by in non-facial visual clues, such as a distinctive bandana or hairstyle, but he normally can't immediately tell who he's speaking to. He can sometimes recognize voices, but prefers not to trust his memory. Avery usually just asks for a person's name once they start talking to him, not bothering to give a reason. He'd rather seem extremely forgetful, or even rude, than explain.
He views people as generally unimportant (or their faces would be worth remembering) and has few qualms about offending or even fighting with anyone. He fights dirty, though, not hesitant about using his purchased digimon to do the fighting for him. This apparent lack of morals makes Avery a good man for the job of memory wipe technician, as he won't lose sleep over deleting someone's life. He often speculates about hypothetical situations with apparent disregard for human life.
Any story Avery tells about his past is a lie, guaranteed. He lies quite often, in fact, sometimes whether he wants to or not. He makes up excuses or gives misinformation without any real motive to at all. He frequently speaks of how he's 'going to rule the world'. He is always honest when talking about his work, though.
He's very controlling, and isn't too good at taking orders. He will sometimes refuse to follow directions, in fact, until he's satisfied with the reason behind them. Avery hates being kept in the dark and would much rather be giving orders himself.
He also has a very strange sense of humor, able to find brevity in the solemnest moment. Avery normally appears to be quite content with his lot in life--and if he's not, he'd never let anyone remember him saying otherwise. He forms emotional attachments with objects more easily than with people, his lab coat being one example of this. He's very good with technology. Avery is fascinated by digimon--they have faces, but their bodies are so distinct he can easily recognize them.
HISTORY.
hometown; Rochester, New York
family members;
Francis Welles [father]
Cecily Welles [mother]
Avery Welles was born an average child to an average household in an average city. In fact, nearly every aspect of his childhood was average. He wasn't a genius or a prodigy, but he wasn't stupid either. He had average friends, went to average schools, and likely would have continued on his path of averageness had that path not been derailed completely when he was 16--when his folks let him learn to drive.
Big mistake.
The accident wasn't anyone's fault, really. It was a rainy day and when the car went over a particularly large puddle, well, the tires locked and he was sent careening off the road. And into a tree. Avery was lucky to have survived--that's what everyone said. But when he woke up in a hospital bed, his parents sitting with him, he couldn't for the life of him recognize who they were.
At that point, Avery became someone far from the norm. He began to focus on machines rather than people, and in fact pushed many of his friends away. He didn't care, however, because he had things that wouldn't judge him for not having face recognition skills. He needed no one else, as far as he was concerned.
The second he was old enough, Avery moved to what he saw as the technology capital of the world: Japan. He settled down in Odaiba and began tinkering around with all sorrts of machines until one day an AIR representative presented him with a job offer. Flattered and delighted, he accepted. Because his original job position of memory wipe technician is rarely required, he took on a second job as a prototype product tester of AIR merchandise.
