APPEARANCE.
Gertrude has no real obvious nationality. The only thing that is obvious is her race being Caucasian/. She is an incredibly watered down mutt. In all, she has a bit of Danish, German, a lot of Swedish, Korean, Russian, and a hint of Native American. This is mostly all that has been kept track of, though, there's still a good number more.
She is a small girl, rather petite. She loves wearing long socks that go up about halfway up her thighs. Her boots are big, bright, purple, and blue. She almost always wears a hoodie or at least long sleeve shirts because she is always a bit cold. All of her clothing that her parents got her matches colors so no matter what she picks they will match. All whites and purples and blues.
She keeps her hair cropped up just above her shoulders, not liking the idea of having long hair. Well actually she likes the idea, but it is more like she simply does not have the patience for it. Wearing her hair too long becomes too much of a chore to keep untangled and decent looking. She has suggested shaving her head bald before (mostly in jest, of course), but her mother is rather vehemently against that.
Her eyes will never meet your eyes.
PERSONALITY.
Gertrude is a healthy young girl with high energy and playfulness. She very reluctantly eats her veggies (though has a fondness for carrots and peas), very much so enjoys her snacks, helps around the house with her designated chores, and brushes her teeth at night. She has a somewhat competitive spirit and is a bit of a sore loser. She loves singing and actually has a somewhat decent singing voice for her age. It's probably thanks to her incredible hearing.
She can be a bit hot-headed. In one of her other schools (before she was moved to the one she is in now), she once punched a kid in the face for trying to take the baggy lunch that had been packed for her. She actually did not get detention (though she was made to go home that day) because the school treated her special despite the fact that it should not have. For the record, she does not like the idea of being treated differently.
Gertrude is blind.
She carries a little plastic tool at her side at all times which she regularly clicks as she goes about her day. The constant click-click-clicking is what helps her 'see.' Her parents had sent her through a program that allowed her to read the world around her using sonar. She can also click her tongue pretty loudly, but it's easier on her to use the clicker instead. She does her best to fake being able to see. Her eyes can still move and do not look disused since she was born without site and it was not external damage, so faking seeing is not too difficult. At least for a little while.
She is a young child so can be rather naive. Of course, she has been told by her parents a lot that strangers are strangers and she should be wary. But her trust can be earned rather quickly and if someone holds their hand out to her she will most likely take it.
She likes to sing little songs she has heard or made up, and if she cannot remember words she will do open-mouthed humming or mumbly gibberish.
She has a subtle Southern accent.
HISTORY.
hometown; Elmwick, USA.
family members; Robert Culley [father], Samantha Culley [mother], Beatrice Culley [eldest sister], Robert Culley Jr. [older brother], Ginger Culley [infant sister]
She was not given special attention or treatment for her blindness, her parents did their best about this. The only special treatment that she got was adjustments so she could function around the house, of course, but her parents did their best not to coddle too much or spoil her.
One thing that probably stands out is her birthday and her middle name. Indeed, her parents did this on purpose. Not the birthday part, they did not choose when that was. But they did choose specifically give her the middle name April thanks to the date. Actually it was her father that had given her that name, it was her mother who had insisted on giving her the name Gertrude after her great aunt. This birth date has been quite a bane for her at times, as jokes are just asking to be cracked. By her father especially. A couple of times everyone forgetting it was her birthday or forgetting any gift or a cake (probably one of the most stressful was the year they did absolutely no prank at all, hilariously enough). None of it was mean spirited nor long-lasting and she knows it but it still had an effect. This has caused her to have a rather dry humor. This does not mean she does not like jokes, she, like her father, honestly likes them. Pranks not so much, though, at least not executing them. Her humor can actually get bone freaking dry at times, actually.
She has always been used to being the youngest. There is a gap between her and her older siblings. Robert Jr. and Beatrice are only about a year apart, plus a week or two. She, however, is five years apart from her brother and six years apart from her sister. Very very recently, however, the new addition to the family has been born. Little Ginger May (yes she was born in May) Culley, no more than a few months old and already obviously a little angel, has plopped herself down as the new youngest in the family. Gertrude is still rather unsure what to think of this, to be honest. She was the baby... It is probably the 12-year gap between her and the baby along with the fact that her mother, thanks to honestly frightening complications during the birth, can no longer birth children. To her the new baby was not even quite real until she was actually born, so she did not even have the nine months of 'holy crap new baby!" to let it truly sink in. But now Ginger is here, and she is here to stay.
As a student, Gertrude was never quite the best but she was certainly not the worst. Some classes were more fascinating or easier while others were boring or more difficult. She had some extra nudges and more concentrated assistance, however, thanks to going to a school for children with learning disabilities. She prefers sportier classes like gym and track as it helps her release some of her energy and feed some of her competitiveness. This was why her parents thought it would not be a bad idea to send her off to the camp in Japan. Plenty of kids go to camp in the states Their little girl was not going to be boring like that! She's going to Japan for it dammit! They gave her an electronic pocket device for translations that says the phrases out loud.
