APPEARANCE.
The first thing you may notice about Lane Pascal is that he looks homeless. This is probably because he is homeless, and he can be found covered in dirt and tears in his clothing nearly all of the time. Starting from the top, the first thing we notice about Lane is that he wears his hat pretty much at all times. This is his subconscious way of showing his mental stability, if it's on that means that all is well but if it is off that means he is either lost in thought or distressed about something. This tan newsy hat covers a head full of messy, layered black hair that he hasn't able to have cut in quite a few years.
Standing at about six foot one, Lane can be seen as somewhat of a giant compared to most children in the digital world, though a lanky one. Due to his lack of exposure to sunlight and deep sleep, he suffers from a perpetual pale state with deep bags under his eyes. He looks sick, and doesn't really seem to take care of himself other than bathe and brush his teeth. His eyes are a dark coal color in the dark, but when light reflects off of it a light blue shine can be seen. He always wears his same baggy outfit in the real world, but because of wardrobe configuration in the digital world he can be seen wearing a dark trenchcoat, black pants, and a tan scarf.
PERSONALITY.
Lane is definitely not what you'd call a 'normal' person. At first glance there is definitely something 'off' about him, though it may be hard to pinpoint exactly what it is. The first thing one may notice is that he doesn't like to talk. Lane is extremely private and doesn't tell people what he is thinking or how he is feeling. Most of the time he just seems to be frustrated or irritated with people, but it's not people that bothers him. He has a hard time being social and blames it on himself. Due to his upbringing, he is under the impression that he is crazy. Lane wants to keep himself from saying anything that other's may find uncomfortable - hence why he mostly keeps to himself.
There seems to be a melancholy aura about him. His frustration and reclusion masks his loneliness and his desires to be closer with people. More than anything, he fears that he will scare people away. To escape these negative feelings he resorts to sleeping or ghost hunting. He becomes very obsessive with his work and even seems to fall into a catatonic state when he concentrates on something. Lane will focus his full attention on something he's doing until he loses all grip of reality. A particular nasty habit of his is that he scrapes at his skin with objects while concentrating to the point he'll start bleeding and not even notice it.
Lane isn't all gloom and rain clouds, however. He's strong in all senses, mentally, physically, and emotinally. He rarely vents to other people and he can handle his problems himself. He is experienced, intelligent, and uses his street smarts to get himself out of trouble. Though he may not be the most sociable person he does show forgiveness and gratitude that he deems deserving of it. He just secretly longs for friends who will accept him for his abnormalities or even find him interesting for them.
HISTORY.
father; Robert Pascal.
mother; Odette Pascal.
siblings(s); Madeline Pascal.
Lane was a good person. Sure, he didn't visit church every sunday or give to charity much, but he was known for helping little old ladies cross the street or offering his bus seat to people more deserving. He was always around to help, and he loved his family and friends and he was living a decent life. So then why did his family forsake and disown him by the age of eighteen?
Lane Pascal had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Incorrectly diagnosed, mind you.
Now this didn't happen immediately. In fact, he was diagnosed with his affliction only around the age of ten. He struggled with staying in-tune with reality but he never felt 'sick'. There were times when he swore he saw monsters, he even had an imaginary friend once, but his parents dismissed it as childlike nature. Lane wasn't terribly worried about it, either. He was medicated, and stayed on the medication for a while but still showed signs of most schizophrenics. He would go into catatonic states, saying that he heard voices and seemed to lack any motivation at all. He did terribly in school but his parents still loved him. Lane seemed to have a decent grip of reality after a decent amount medication... that is, until the age of twelve.
Then Madeline was born.
Lane wasn't sure why his parents decided to have another child so late but it bothered him. He watched the little girl grow and he was steadily beginning to feel replaced. He began to grow tired of his parent's constant praise of her first steps... first words... etc. He decided that the only company he needed would be himself.
Lane had always been interested in the paranormal. When he wasn't at school he would either ghost hunt or sleep in hopes of lucid dreaming. Every time he had a dream he would always hear a faint calling of his name - but he believed that his medication was hindering the voice. He finally made the decision to stop taking his medication completely, and he began seeing things.
Silhouettes of monsters, eyes watching him, what no one knew is that what he was experiencing was real. By the age of eighteen he had nearly flunked out of school, and it got to the point where he didn't want to keep this from anyone anymore. He wanted to see if anyone else had been experiencing what he had been. When he turned to his parents with his experiences they knew that he had stopped taking his medicine and scolded him mercilessly.
It was salt in the wound and Lane became exasperated with his family. In a bout of self-loathing he decided to no longer burden his family and ran away from home. Though he hadn't been a very good student, Lane was intelligent enough that he knew what to do. He broke away from his family and hopped a flight to Japan, knowing that the technology he needed to find out what the monsters were was there. As soon as he got there he spent all his earnings on electronic equipment in hopes of capturing EVPS (electric voice phenomena). Lane is now living in an abandoned (supposedly haunted) building, dead broke and homeless.
