full personality →
Despite the fact Hayate is usually frowning and his eyes tend to be sort of emotionless, he really isn't a downer or anything. When talking to people he just seems normal or happy as long as it fits the situation, never keeping himself from making any jokes if he thinks they're relevant. He likes to talk to people and is rather social, on most days not hesitating to speak to just about anyone. The only unknown factor is if people will talk back to him, though normally they do.
Hayate's emotionless expression usually doesn't fetch him much attention other than someone asking if he's alright, or maybe just a creeped out glance. He is completely unaware of how his face looks though, so he's usually confused by these reactions unless he is actually sad about something for once. The young man actually has issues with showing how he feels, or simply not knowing what to feel and thus his face is mostly emotionless unless he has some other feeling to go off of. He might appear to mimic how another person is feeling, and once a person gets to know him it's difficult to see if he really feels anything on his own.
The fact is he rarely does feel anything on his own, he needs someone to be a template for him or he really will go through the day feeling absolutely nothing aside from being unsettled by this. Hayate doesn't really like the fact he can't seem to emote on his own, and doesn't particularly understand why he's this way. He has been this way as long as he can remember, and despite being faintly frustrated by his condition he denied any and all medication that has been suggested to him. He rarely ever goes to the doctor because he knows some talk about a psychiatrist or pills will eventually pop up, and he really does not want to talk about it.
Hayate refers to himself as an 'emotional adapter', since he seems to shape the feelings he puts out around others in an effort to adapt to the situation. He's never entirely sure if these feelings are ever genuine, but he would really like to think that they are. The only genuine emotion he believes he can feel all on his own is sadness, since this is typically how he seems to feel when alone. He doesn't really know why that's the only one he can express all by himself, and he really wishes that wasn't the case; no matter how he tries though, this has stayed the only one he can feel freely.
Despite being old enough to drink, Hayate never does and in fact tends to stay away from it. This was the decision the friends he's managed to make made, as according to them he gets 'weird' and 'confusing' when he's drunk. He finally seems to be able to feel on his own then, but he then falls victim to radical and sudden shifts in mood. One minute he can be insanely happy, incredibly angry another, or inconsolably miserable the next.
He can't remember these events but he believes it, since he doubts they'd made something like that up and has taken to the status of a permanent designated driver rather well. Hayate is tempted to drink sometimes but refrains, preferring to stay in his right mind... No matter how depressing and otherwise emotionless it may be. He tends to go to social events a lot and just outside in general so he may have someone to adapt to, and he hopes maybe if he does this enough he'll finally learn how to feel his own emotions. So far though, he hasn't really had any luck. HISTORY. hometown → Osaka, Japan.

full history →
Hayate's lack of emotion has been with him ever since he was very young, perhaps even since he was born. His parents noticed as he grew up there was a distinct absence of feeling from their son, easily seeing that he just seemed to mirror others instead of displaying the emotions he might really have. They thought maybe he was just nervous around others or in social situations, and they tried to get him to 'open up' more. However the boy was already as open as he could get, and he knew this.
Even so he endured many attempts from his parents to get him to emote better, not getting annoyed partially because he couldn't usually and because he knew their hearts were in the right place. Hayate knew they only wanted to help, but he really didn't think they could... And he was right. No amount of gifts from his parents or visits to a psychiatrist ever helped, and he outright refused to take medication even if it was bought for him. If he could feel while on pills, then the feelings would merely be a product of them and he didn't want that; he wanted his emotions to be his own.
Despite all of their worries for their son, Hayate did not live the life of a friendless child. He began to adapt to others early and this managed to gain him friends, at least with those who weren't put off by his usual emotionless expression. He was taunted here and there for being an 'emotionless freak' but he never reacted in the way they wanted, and so the name calling never lasted very long. His friends never really stood up for him, but they pretty much ignored the taunting right along with him.
Hayate continued to make and lose friends throughout his school years, keeping more from highschool than any previous school. He seemed like the average highschooler then too, even with his inability to feel by himself. He went to parties with his friends, though the first one that had alcohol made it obvious to his friends that he should not drink... Ever.
The mood swings he had gone through had apparently ruined the whole evening for everyone, and Hayate was shunned by others for a while for something he couldn't even remember. After being told what had happened he pretty much never so much as looked at anything alcoholic, falling into place as the designated walker (his friends had issues getting home sometimes before he had a car) and then eventually the designated driver. To his friends he seemed content with the idea, though in reality he felt absolutely nothing for the situation. He really didn't know how to feel about it, though finally some bit of frustration rose up in him.
It wasn't really towards the fact he couldn't drink, more so that there had been a period where he had managed to feel on his own but it had gone terribly and he couldn't remember it. Hayate knew that he at least disliked the idea of not being able to control himself, another factor behind him never drinking again. His friends didn't really know what to do to help so they pretty much ended up doing nothing, leaving Hayate to his sobriety. His parents were at least pleased with his decision, as he had oddly enough come clean with it about it as well as telling them what had happened while under the influence.
The whole talk had left him shaky with the nervousness of his parents, as they wondered how their son would turn out from here. As it turns out Hayate stayed virtually the same as the years went on. He had a few issues getting a job since he didn't seem enthusiastic and employers believed he could care less about the position. Eventually though he managed to get one and moved out a short time after he turned 20, living on his own in a small apartment.
Shortly after he moved out, he contracted some sort of stomach virus which he figured would go away on its own... But after more than a few days of being completely miserable Hayate decided a trip to the hospital would be wise. The decision was one that ended up saving his life, as the stomach virus ended up provoking a dormant condition he'd had called Crohn's disease. What had extended his sickness was a flare up of the condition, and with nothing to go on really the doctors were lost on what to treat it with when the standard medications for stomach problems didn't work. By the time they figured out the right method of treatment he had nearly died, the untreated sickness keeping him from eating anything substantial and the nutritional IVs could only do so much.
Hayate recovered slowly with how long the flare up had gone on before being forced into remission, but he recovered nonetheless. He left the hospital with a prescription for something that would help keep the disease in remission, but it turned out that was all that could be done. Since then he has stuck to eating only certain foods, out of a fear of provoking another flare up. One he might not survive. OUT-OF-CHARACTER. undesired digimon → Mushroommon, Neemon, Hyokomon.
