APPEARANCE.
Nathan would prefer not to draw attention to himself, and it really shows when it comes to what he wears. He never wears anything with writing on it because he doesn't want anyone to stare at him as they try to read it. He also won't wear anything with designs so as not to risk people staring at him as they try to figure out what the picture is; his shoes are always plain as well, as he strives to be as unnoticeable as he possibly can. As a result all of his clothes are blank and what most would consider boring, as all of his clothes are usually dull or muted colors.
His hair is just a normal brown color, and heaven forbid he dye it or style it somehow; it's even hard to get him to cut it sometimes because of the whole 'not wanting to be noticed' thing. Nathan does not want to have anything at all on his person that may provoke someone's curiosity, though of course that's nearly impossible with some people and he knows that rather unfortunate fact. He usually moves with his head down, his brown eyes fixed on the ground or floor as if that is the only place he has any right to look. He usually has his shoulders sagged as if he's just been yelled at, and he tends to be very jumpy and tense.
One contradictory thing to his need to not be noticed and have nothing on him to be questioned of would be the silver bracelets he wears on his right wrist. Nathan always wears them but they may not always be visible, on the occasion that he wears a sweatshirt or a long sleeved shirt. The metallic clinking accompanies him everywhere though regardless, a sound that makes him inwardly cringe every time as he dreads someone asking what it is. Has the thought to take them off occurred to him? Well of course it has!
He just... Doesn't want to.
PERSONALITY.
Nathan, in the simplest terms is... A weenie. A wimp, a weakling, a crybaby, you get it. His self confidence is buried under layers of doubt and fear, fear that is for the most part rather irrational. If he's told that though or to get over it, it won't make any difference; something he's been trying to get people to understand for some time.
He is very uncertain and uncomfortable in social situations, to the point where people who don't have the same problem might think it's ridiculous. Nathan may do anything from cringing or hiding behind something while in conversation, to something as extreme as bolting away from them in a desperate move to get away from the stress and panic of social interaction. With one-on-one interactions he will fair much better, though he might still seem extremely wary or like he's about to go off and hide. This is true even with his parents, as it seems like all people regardless of demeanor or connection scare him.
Nathan is like the quiet kid at school who sits in the corner and never talks to anyone, and seems to ignore anyone who tries to talk to him. He never actually ignores anyone, but usually he's so nervous and tongue-tied when people try to talk to him that he just can't get a response out. As a response he usually just sort of sinks down and waits for them to go away, which doesn't get a really friendly response due to how this looks on the outside. It's not like he can explain this to anyone though, given how talkative he is with every single person he meets; he may occasionally talk to someone if they talk to him first though... Very rare occasions though.
When Nathan does talk he often stutters out of anxiety, as well as taking longer than necessary pauses between words. He may even just trail off and stop talking if he thinks whatever he was saying is stupid, refusing to finish what he's saying even if he's asked repeatedly what he was going to say. He folds easily under pressure and may either give in to whatever he's being pressured to to or he might just run away and hide. Yelling at him will make him stay put, or more accurately scare him stiff even though he'll feel like running away and... Hiding, like he does from everything and everyone else.
In the rare, extremely rare, cases where he actually feels comfortable around someone he may actually talk and be able to hold a conversation. Nathan will still stutter and stall no matter who he's talking to though, as it almost seems like its become permanent. He usually prefers silence because of this, as he thinks he sounds like an idiot when he speaks. He would rather just sit there and listen to people talk if they're around, partly because he wants to be sure that they aren't talking about him.
Aside from that Nathan would rather really just listen to people, and if someone were to ask he would sit and listen to their problems and worries. He's no therapist of course but, as one might put it he's a great person to whine to since he's a whiner himself. He won't get mad about it, though he never seems to get mad... Ever. In fact if he's in a confrontation that's all someone else's fault he'll still apologize over and over again, before he turns to leave.
He seems rather unable to stand up for himself, as he never has and unless his confidence improves he never will.
HISTORY.
hometown; Glasgow, Montana.
family members;Aaron Kendall[father]
Eva Kendall[mother]
Nathan grew up in Montana, and if ever asked he might say there's nothing there... If he can even get himself to talk anyway.
His parents raised him in a small town called Glasgow, and with how sparsely populated the entire state is and with him being an only child it isn't hard to imagine how isolated he was. Nathan was a quiet child from the start, and once it came time for him to start school his parents thought he would come out of it and make friends... Instead however, he seemed to clam up even more somehow. He didn't talk to anyone at all, he wouldn't play like the other kids, he'd just go sit alone somewhere and watch. Everyone seemed to take it as a lack of interest, but then it began to manifest itself more as what seemed like an actual fear of the other children and teachers.
When spoken to Nathan would shrink away and try to hide behind his arms or whatever he could, in most cases not even responding. This happened with anyone who tried to talk to him at school, and it even started happening with his parents soon enough. The reason for this was that as Nathan progressed through his school years he didn't seem to be getting used to people at all, and his grades were suffering from the fact that he would often completely shut down in class. His father had been a rather strict person to start with, and with his grades at stake he merely became stricter and harder to talk to.
Aaron was the complete opposite of understanding towards his son's plight in social situations, and merely expected Nathan to 'toughen up' and start to talk to people. His father would force him to go do things with other kids or volunteer places to make him social, which only served to scare him even more. His mother was more understanding but didn't seem like she could really do anything to defend her son from Aaron's radical methods of fixing the issue, leaving him to be shoved out of the house daily.
When it was found that Nathan wasn't doing what Aaron wanted, and was instead just going off somewhere to hide for a few hours, he was furious. By now the fear of yelling had been pushed into his head so this scolding was nothing new, but it still scared him into finally making himself actually be social... Or at least as social as he could manage, which wasn't very. As a result these issues followed him into his freshmen year in high school, and they even got worse. The amount of people wasn't really that different but the atmosphere was different, and that was enough to make him not want to be there at all.
Nathan started to find ways to seem sick, and his mother took pity on him. Aaron was less alright with it but let it slide... At least until the fourth or fifth day in a row. His father started forcing him to go back to school, and as a result he seemed to start withdrawing into himself even more than before. Aaron did not take the steps backwards very well, starting to scold his son almost daily for the social issues that even Nathan himself didn't entirely understand.
Eventually things came to a point where Nathan's father seemed to have had it with his antisocial behavior, and decided to do something rather drastic; the high school was trying a study abroad program, and Aaron saw it as a way to force his son to act normally. Nathan was of course terrified and saw no good in this, but he had absolutely no say at all in it. Without a spine he had no way to object to being sent away somewhere, and on his father's demand he signed himself up for it. Eva didn't want her son to go due to how scared she knew he would be, but she couldn't talk Aaron out of it.
As a result Nathan packed some things and was sent to Japan through the exchange program, to a place where he couldn't understand the native language at all. He was lucky enough to have a host family who spoke English, but even so he wasn't sure how he was going to do in school... Not to mention the fact he was scared to death of this new place. He couldn't even bring himself to really speak to his host family, and going outside was out of the question for quite a few days. When he finally did go outside the first thing he did was get lost, something that is sure to set it in his mind that his experience in this country is going to be terrible.
He doesn't even think it's possible it will help him with his social problems at all. His only source of comfort in this new place is a set of silver bracelets given to him by his mother before he left, something that was meant to remind him of home.
