PERSONALITY.
If somebody told you Sangloupmon was a no good pillager who cares little beyond his own personal gain, well... That's actually not that far off. He is a pillager, who is currently leading a small mercenary brigade. He feels no guilt for the villages he leaves to burn to the ground. He cares not for the lives he takes. His sense of morality is quite limited, and most only ever see the darkest parts of him.
Sangloupmon enjoys the rush of battle. He enjoys snuffing out the lives of those around him. Once upon a time he would have thought it wrong, but growing up, he was taught to fight, to destroy, and he simply does not know or at this point care about there being any other way. However, even he has limits. He is not one for excessive cruelty, and he typically ensures a swift kill to his enemies.
Contrary to popular belief, Sangloupmon isn't completely without mercy. He does have a soft spot for young digimon, mostly those in-training level or younger. These digimon are spared his brutality. The reasons behind this are often misunderstood, and often skewed in something dark in the minds of others. Whatever others believe though, his mercy is genuine, and he blames it on the memory of the Viximon his brigade had taken years ago. It has left him quite fond of those little ones.
Survival of the fittest is a concept that sits very well with Sangloupmon. It was pretty much all he ever knew since he was a wee Dorimon, that people out there were ultimately looking after themselves and didn't care about others beyond what they wanted to think of them. He scoffs at people who think peace could ever exist. It can't. Even those begging for peace were quick to consider anyone they didn't approve of worthy of existence.
Sangloupmon is well known for his stalking abilities. He strongly favors his black mind ability, and has exercised its use to his greatest advantage for stealth. This makes him top pick as a scout or spy. His black mind ability also allows him to get by a number of barriers that he would normally be too large to pass through, making him quite difficult to capture him without a fight. Unfortunately it does take a degree of concentration that isn't afforded to him when in battle.
He is also quite the serious and proud character, and not one to joke around, or tolerate others behaving in ruckus ways. His pride has often made it difficult for him to admit to any weakness, or say or do anything to deliberately show it. Its made expressing his concerns very difficult, and such inabilities have caused him some of his worst troubles.
For all his faults and the horrible deeds he's done, Sangloupmon is quite the flirt and romantic. Even as a young Strabimon, he was flirting with the female digimon, and more often than not used his charms to snatch the belongings of those females while they weren't looking. He can do serious romance though, and his skills with this were often used to impress his love. Unfortunately this aspect of him hasn't seen much use in quite a while.
Despite the lead of his brigade falling on his shoulders, Sangloupmon is anything but a good leader. He is a follower by nature, and far better at taking orders than handing them out, and he is definitely not very good at coming up with tactical plans. That said, there was very little he could do to keep the brigade's numbers from dwindling the few digimon still remain loyal to him.
Sangloupmon is a very poor liar, and his attempts can almost be humorous. To avoid getting in that awkward situation, he often works around it giving only parts of the truth, or he'll just be brutally honest. On the other hand though, he also has difficulty telling when others are lying to him, making him quite gullible at times.
Sangloupmon might have been a better digimon if he had gotten the right help when he was young. Unfortunately society constantly pushed him away, taking his means of survival as nothing more that selfish thievery. People only saw the darkness inside him, and thanks to their rejection, that darkness became real, shaping Sangloupmon into the cold hearted pillager he is today.
HISTORY.
Sangloupmon was born a rather tough little digimon, and it seemed straight out of his egg he had a knack for battle. While other baby form digimon in primary village were content to play peacefully, Dodomon was more intent on practicing his fighting moves. He spent a lot of time firing his little iron beads at whatever he found to be a suitable target. His early practice made him one of the strongest baby digimon in primary village during the time he was there.
While his fighting practice made him quite strong, it didn't make him any friends. Most of the young digimon avoided him, viewing him more as a power hungry beast than anything else. Though he did little to deserve it, Dodomon found himself ostracized by his fellow young digimon. He resented this. He hadn't done anything wrong, yet others were quick to judge him as a bad digimon.
As he grew older, he just continued to focus on his fighting skills since everyone was too afraid of him to be friends. Once he digivolved into Dorimon he began wandering further and further away from primary village, wanting to escape the harsh company of his peers. One day he ended up going too far, and he ran into a digimon brigade.
His first instinct was to run, but they cornered him easily. That was when he tried fighting back, attacking with his Metal Drop attack. Needless to say, it was virtually useless despite giving a goblimon a black eye to remember. However, instead of turning him into data, their leader took him into consideration, and admiring the Dorimon's spunk, he allowed him to join their brigade instead.
Dorimon joined them, not having much other choice than let the brigade kill him otherwise. The brigade went around raiding villages of their goods, causing havoc and destruction where ever they went. While Dorimon had never dreamed of actually hurting anybody, he discovered he no longer cared any more beyond ensuring his victims a quick demise. People thought he was a monster already, so it didn't make much of a difference to how he was viewed, and the brigade appreciated his strength. That was enough to make him content.
It wasn't too long until Dorimon digivolved to Strabimon. With his substantial increase in size, he was growing to be one of the stronger members of the brigade. With his tendency to take no long cuts, he was becoming known for his sheer combat efficiency. Despite raiding village after village and killing many mercilessly, he wasn't entirely without conscience, and he was growing more irritated with his leaders tendency to draw out the suffering of their opponents.
Though Strabimon didn't care to be anything more than 'co-workers' with the other brigade memebers, he did make one friend. A young Viximon which they had kidnapped after their leader slain the digimon that was looking after her. It was the first time he had felt bad for any of their victims for a long time. While their leader raised her as a warrior, he extended friendship to her, allowing the Viximon reprieve between rigorous training sessions, and both of them gaining a powerful friendship between each other.
Time passed, and the duo continued to grow stronger. Strabimon digivolved to Sangloupmon, and Viximon became Renamon. Renamon herself was near unrecognizable from that terrified little Viximon that had been forcefully recruited into their ranks. She had grown into a strong and cunning warrior. Sangloupmon had strength, she had intelligence. They both despised their leader. Renamon wanted revenge, and caring as much for the Renamon and far less for their leader, Sangloupmon wanted vengeance for her too.
The two, plus a good number fellow brigadiers who also shared hatred for their leader, executed an assault on their leader. Renamon's intelligence, Sangloupmon's strength and enough numbers to keep the odds in their favor made for a resounding success. With their former leader dead, Renamon took leadership of the brigade, with Sangloupmon holding second in command.
Now leaders of the brigade, they added mercenary work to their agenda, selling their services to the highest bidder. Their pillaging also took more creative turns, one of their now more common tactics being to tax villages in exchange for not raiding them for all they had. Under their leadership, their brigade had grown to be countless times more effective than it had ever been under their old leader.
In addition, Renamon and Sangloupmon's relationship grew, their inseparable friendship blossoming into love. Even though nothing much had changed as he expected to, with Renamon being just as cruel and permissive of torture as their leader had been. It made Sangloupmon uneasy at times, but love can make one ignore things that would otherwise bother them. He often considered suggesting she stop, but pride was ever more a factor in his constant silence.
One day Sangloupmon had run into a Sepikmon, who claimed to be a seer, who visioned of Renamon rising to be so powerful that she'd come to destroy the digital world. At first, even Sangloupmon couldn't believe this. Sepikmon pointed out how cruel and powerful she was currently, and only at rookie level. He told Sangloupmon her power would continue to grow until every living creature would be at her mercy. The only way to stop her would be to put her down before she got that far.
Sangloupmon dismissed the Sepikmon as a fool, but the seeds of doubt were planted. He didn't want to believe Renamon would be capable of such a thing, and he loved her, why would he kill her? Numerous times he tried to ask her about calming down, taking it easier on the villagers they raided. Pride fought with fear, and pride kept managing to stop him from voicing his concerns.
Pride couldn't take away the doubt he felt inside. The longer it went on, the harder it became to convince himself that Renamon wasn't, wouldn't ever be as terrible as the Sepikmon had described. Doubt could only build up so long unchecked, until he finally believed what the Sepikmon had told him. Heart as heavy as stone, he hired an assassin to kill Renamon, believing that if she was reconfigured, she would go back to being as she was back when she was Viximon, before their former leader had tainted her.
He set it up, had Renamon wait for 'him' to meet her. While the assassin was to kill her, and bring him her digi-egg. Sangloupmon waited for the assassin to return to him with the digi-egg, but he never came. Instead, all that met him was the maniacal laughter of that Sepikmon, who had watched and waited for this very moment. Sangloupmon would have shredded the monkey on the spot, but he had to get to Renamon.
Reaching the spot where he had her go, it was completely deserted. There was vague signs of a struggle, but the assassin had been swift. Renamon was dead, and there was no digi-egg to be found. Renamon was dead. The assassin was likely already long gone. Grief stricken and hating himself, he had no choice but to accept the terrible deed he had done to the woman he loved.... Just because of that idiot monkey.
With Renamon gone, Sangloupmon was forced to take leadership of the brigade. Without Renamon's cunning intelligence to guide them and with Sangloupmon's lack of leadership skills, the brigade quickly fell apart until their numbers were cut more than half. Now they were back to petty thievery again, struggling just to get enough to eat, and Sangloupmon never stopped regretting what he did to his only love.
