APPEARANCE.
Chinatsu is what one would refer to as a traditional 'yamato nadeshiko' (Japanese beauty), though she is still a little on the small and childish side and therefore has yet to bloom into her true potential. Her slightly rounded, childish face is framed by long, lush, slightly wavy black locks that hang down her back in a ebony waterfall. Her eyes are dark as well, though they are quite a bit wider than is common in Asia. A tiny nose and matching small mouth round out a face that talent scouts in Japan dream of.
Her skin bears just the right amount of tan to bring out the glow of her youth without her being either ghostly pale or too over-exposed. The same can be said of her build; not overly nor under-muscled. Her outfits always match and are always in fashion, though she tends to stick to Japanese brands instead of going for foreign imports. She looks just as at home in a one-piece dress as a kimono or miko outfit.
The worst that could be said of her is that she looks soft, squishy. There are no callouses on her hands, no worry lines on her face, no underlying hesitation in her wide eyes. It is painfully obvious that this girl has not experienced hardship or trial, or very much of the world at all. Her gentle, carefree smile only serve to compound the feeling of being a naive, sheltered girl that she gives off.
PERSONALITY.
Chinatsu is a respectful, traditional Japanese girl. She worries more about the state of the 'group' she belongs to, overall, more than her own needs. She is obedient to the point of subservience and has a hard time speaking up for herself for fear of being seen as selfish or not a team player. She spent most of her early life bowing to her parents' orders and most of the rest 'til now obeying all the orders given her by her producer, no matter how strict or time-consuming. She is often seen as being cold or stuck-up by those who don't know her well as she would rather spend a day practicing and improving herself and her singing than spend free time with friends. Actually, even those who know her well have a hard time seeing past her 'tatemae', her Japanese projected personality.
Her 'honne', her true self, varies only slightly from what everyone sees. She really does enjoy obeying and being ordered around... because it's easier. Hanging out with other girls her age, making small talk, all that is so hard and unstructured. She never knows what to say and always ends up just standing back shyly, not getting involved. Rather than doing that why shouldn't she spend time making her parents and her producers happy by putting in 110% for them? It's so much easier to please the people who order her around than it would be to keep her friends happy with her being so shy and distant all the time. So she buries herself in work and gives her warm smiles and time to her fans and staff rather than to her friends.
If she had one wish granted, it would be to gain a little bit of strength when she's not in her idol persona. To be able to talk normally to someone, to tell them how she really feels, to not feel the crushing shyness. If only she could be as outgoing as she was when she was on stage when she was standing right next to one person. If only she had the courage to stop being a doll for the world to look at, and instead become a precious friend for even just one person. But that would take courage she doesn't have, not the way she is right now.
HISTORY.
hometown; Kyoto, Japan
family members;
Saori Kayuu (Mother)
Maharu Kayuu (Father)
The Kayuu family is one of Kyoto's 'old blood', a Japanese family complete with branches and its own family crest given to them by the Empire during one era or another. They are florists by trade, with import ties in every country and a sub-division of floral-arrangemt (ikebana) specialists renowned throughout the country.
Though every daughter of the line is trained thoroughly in the art of botany, they are also given all the traditional training of a Japanese lady; dance, poetry, calligraphy and music among others. Chinatsu, from an early age, showed exceeding prowess in the area of music, with a voice that her parents would brag about to all their rich and powerful friends. After a few years her parents dropped her from her other private studies and had her focus entirely on song and dance. She started on Enka and traditional songs, but after her father was prompted by one of his business friends, she switched to more lively fields of music. By 10 she had debuted on television as a refreshing new idol who combined the traditions and culture of her family and Kyoto in general with the more modern trends of the current Japanese society. Her working name was 'Chika' (Thousand Flowers), a combination of the first kanji from her given and family names (Chinatsu - Thousand Summers/Kayuu - Flower Play).
Though her parents were traditionalists, they were also capitalists. Chinatsu was often involved in ad campaigns for her parents' many powerful friends' companies, and she often debuted popular Japanese fashion outfits for kids. It was actually through one of these many contracts arranged by her parents that she found herself in her current situation.
There was a project titled 'OpenAIdol', a computer program that would take a real singer's voice and allow users to manipulate it electronically to create original songs (a la Vocaloid). Chinatsu was chosen to record her voice as one of the idols in the project. The recording was long and tedious, since it focused more on getting down all the various tones and pitches of the voice rather than singing any songs or music. However, right when Chinatsu was beginning to be truly bored with the whole thing, her life changed dramatically. That day something strange happened in the software that was recording her voice, and she felt something like a cold shock run from the headphones she was wearing to all throughout her body. It seemed to focus in her throat, and it went numb.
Chinatsu lost her voice. Her voice was not 'gone', in fact it was still being recorded in the machine as if she had kept singing, but it was no longer within her body. Terrified, she watched as the electronic equipment continued to register a voice that was no longer hers!
The doctors who examined her tried to explain it by saying that her vocal chords had been paralyzed by a direct shock from the equipment, but they had no idea how to fix it. Her parents threatened to sue the company that had been running the event, but Chinatsu wasn't interested in such things. With a simple internet search she found various videos on NicoVideo (Japan's answer to Youtube) with her voice set over a blank background or strange, staticy images. 'She' was singing songs Chinatsu had never publicly released, songs from her childhood or just songs she had chanced to sing or hum to herself at times.
Terrified, she tried to tell her parents (by writing on a small digital display board they had given her) that her voice had been stolen by something that was on the internet, but they attributed it to shock from the accident. They decided she should take the summer off at a camp in Odaiba to relax and recover from the stress. They assured her that her voice would come back if she just rested for a while, and sent her off. Chinatsu silently obeyed, of course, but she could not shake the feeling that this event had been only a tiny part of something much, much bigger than herself.

Was it better or worse now that she had no voice? Looking back and forth at the two boys who were worried over her, Chinatsu tried to answer that question in her heart. Back when she COULD talk, would she have been able to, in such a situation? She doubted it. It was so hard, talking to people face-to-face like this. Now, perhaps, one could say her life had gotten easier. All she needed to do was make a sign to her throat and shake her head sadly to communicate that she couldn't speak anymore. Everything went so much smoother now! ... Or so she would have liked to say to herself. Instead of being easier to get along, she found that she was even more invisible of a presence than she had once been. With the silence hanging between her and those around her like a cold barrier, she had no way of ever getting close now. She could sense the uncomfortable feeling of the boys as they tried to hold a one-sided conversation with her, trying to wait politely for her written responses without rushing her, but still giving off an air of impatience.
Someday she would get her voice back, and then she'd smile and respond when someone asked her if she was alright. She'd chat with her friends about her day. She'd tell her parents how much she loved them... She'd sing again. Wincing with a pain that had nothing to do with her scraped knees, she reached up to clutch gently at her throat, tears stinging the corners of her eyes. How weak she was, to get teary-eyed over such a thing. Look, now the boys were panicking and thinking she was badly hurt. But she couldn't help herself. She had no tolerance for hardship, and it was hard, oh so hard, to have no voice.
((Note: I intend to have Chinatsu's Digimon partner 'speak for her' and fill in her silences... though I also intend for him to only get it right about 30% of the time due to their personalities not synching up perfectly.))
