So how bout you make, how bout you make a little room for me?

APPEARANCE.
come hear my brave song
Gaia is quite a special child in the fact that she is so small. Though she is 12, she appears as though she is somewhere between 8 and 10. The fair color and fine texture of her hair doesn't help matters either. In fact it merely adds to the ruse that she looks younger than she really is. There's also the very youthful round shape to her face, and her wide and very innocent light brown eyes.
Her small and child-like head rests on the shoulders of a very small and extremely frail frame. Being sick quite often since birth has caused her to have a very short stature, only 4'5" from toe to the top of her head. It has also given her a very thin appearance, with spindly arms that can barely lift a full bag as well as toothpick like fingers that have difficulty in firmly grasping onto things.
Though her lack of stature and strength could be viewed as a downside, it has also given her a very gentle appearance. With a sweet smile that shines as brightly as the sun, she makes the best of every situation. Her lack of physical strength also means that she is able to take her time and put a lot of effort into what she does. Even her voice is as soft as a feather.
PERSONALITY.
Having gone through so many difficulties early in life, one might think that Gaia would have a grim view of the world - the one that made her so sick, the one that made her lose both her father and brother, the one that seemed to continue to take things away from her one by one. This, however, is not the case with this young girl. With the support of her mother, she has been able to grow up strong in her own way. No she may not be able to take part in any sports clubs or generally be outside for very long, or even carry things for others - instead she is strong in spirit. She is able to take the things that are happening around her, make light of the situation, and learn from it as to how to make it better in the future.
Since being unable to play outside made making friends very difficult for her, Gaia learned to do other things in order to keep herself entertained and to make friends. She took a great deal of interest in art, and since it was something that could be done either inside or outside, she was still able to make friends - especially within the art club. With art, her lack of strength became her greatest tool. She could sit for a great amount of time and focus on every little detail of her pieces, and her gentle strokes layered on top of each other made for beautiful pieces.
Since she tended to be sick a lot as a child, keeping her friends tended to be a bit difficult as she would miss the club meetings. Gaia, however, learned to smile through all of her hardships and just be grateful for the friends that she did have. Her mother told her multiple times that if they couldn't deal with having a friend that was constantly in the hospital or had some talent that they didn't have, that they simply weren't real friends.

Being born into a military family isn't easy for anyone - being born prematurely while your father is out on a tour is even more difficult. Such was the way that Gaia was born into this world; two months early, and while her father was away on a tour. However, having been born in a military hospital ended up being a blessing since they were certainly well equipped for just about any medical issue. The infant was immediately whisked away from her mother and rushed to the Intensive Care Unit where she was placed in an incubator soon after being cleaned off.
The girl's first year was extremely difficult as she spent most of the time in the hospital. Her mother and older brother, however, seemed to love her way too much to allow her to be in any sort of discomfort. So one would think that being pampered from infancy, Gaia was set for a wonderful life. Wrong. Though her mother and brother took very good care of her, and her health did gradually begin to get better as she grew older, the problems just seemed to snowball out of control.
When her father returned home for the first time, he seemed disgusted at the pale infant in his wife's arms. Not only was she a girl, but she looked weak. As a man of the military, he wanted his children to be strong. Females in general were not very common as soldiers, and there was no way that this girl would cut it for even a single day at bot camp; no matter how much her health improved between now and then. Though it was a bit disheartening for her mother who loved her so much, she continued to raise the child with the help of Cadmus.
By the time Gaia was two, her mother began to notice something new was wrong with her already frail daughter. By this age, Cadmus had already begun to speak a few of the words that he heard said around him. Gaia, however, seemed to have tunnel vision whenever she was playing, and rarely reacted to many sounds around her, let alone trying to replicate them. Concerned, she took the toddler to yet another common visit to the doctor, and after a few tests, they found that the girl was partially deaf in both ears. The doctor explained to her mother that, while she could still hear, to her it would sound muffled, the way sound travels under water.
Having caught it so early, however, the doctors were able to help before her lack of hearing caused an adverse effect on her ability to learn. They came up with a way to teach her while using very few verbal commands or explanation. It took a great deal of effort by the people around her, but Gaia eventually learned how to talk, and began to understand that she needed to look at people when they were talking so as to better understand what they were saying.
As if the problems with her health weren't bad enough, her mother and father were experiencing problems of their own. These problems eventually led to their separation, and though she had never really seen much of her father, she was sad to be separated from her big brother. Once she left with her mother, she was taken to Japan to stay with her grandparents. Being a single mother was difficult, but Brooklyn managed with the help of her parents.
Now that she is older, Gaia wears a pair of hearing aids that look more like headphones than the medical supply. It was her mother's idea to hide them in this form, thinking that her daughter had gone through enough and that being bullied for being unable to properly hear was not something she wanted her daughter to go through.
