Ah. Night in the big city of Odaiba. The traffic was finally becoming less and less congested and fewer and fewer people were walking home. Little did passersby know, a certain alleyway contained a certain individual who was looking for something in these people... one by one with judging eyes as they searched and searched..
No. No. No.
His mouth moistened, salivating while running his tongue lightly along his teeth. Hungry...so hungry... but not for food. Gear tickled his palms with the tips of his fingers in anticipation. Hehe...human bodies were so fun to play with~! So many new sensations and feelings that came with them. His favorite thus far had been so foreign and new to him, but one definitely that made his top ten. Warmth...
That was what he hungered for. Even the most malicious humans had a beating heart... which meant fresh and thick blood pumping through their system and kept their bodies alive and warm. It was so fascinating to feel the heat drain from their flesh, it was his favorite to experience this sensation while pressing his cheek against theirs. It reminded him of the same strange satisfaction as flipping a pillow to the cool side in the middle of the night.
Oh how he longed to feel that again... but unfortunately his job had become more of a priority. It had been far too long since he turned in a human to A.I.R. The Gargoylemon smelled something strange and beautiful in the air, however. A dark heart that was already tainted all by itself. His mouth watered the moment he caught the scent, but all he could do in this sea of people was stand back and wait to see if he could spot this lovely creature in the crowd.
Every hair on his body was on end, his horrible red eyes tracing over each and every human that stepped into his line of sight. Where are you? he giggled to himself, his monstrous eyes well-hidden behind his mop of hair - hopefully making his frightening appearance that much more difficult to detect.
His heart pounded, Gear knew that he was in love with this human before he'd even see them. With each passing man, woman, and child, however... it wasn't them. They weren't the ones that smelled of darkness and pain... he wanted HER... whoever she was. She would be next.
My sweet little girl... I feel you here... Now just to find you...
THAT'S IT!
Before he could even see who he had been looking for, Gear stepped out innocently from the alleyway he had been hiding in when he saw the silhouette of a girl close by. He was excited to see how well he'd play the innocent, clumsy civilian. But he knew, the moment that he could get a word out of whoever this girl was... the moment his body would make contact with hers as he 'accidentally' collided into her... she would be his.
His and only his.

She had always liked the night. Fewer people were outside, and there was no way, when walking, to mistake Odaiba at night for any city in Canada. It was bright, almost garish - only once she started approaching her own street did it become more familiar. The residential areas were quiet, and the streets no longer bustled.
By all rights, she should have found the lack of people nervewracking, but she could handle herself. She had done it before, after all - the only reason she had left her relatively independent existence was because....
Her steps faltered, and she stared straight ahead, waiting for the traffic light to change so she could cross. Yes, her city had had too many memories. Memories she didn't need. They had dragged her down - after this exchange program, she would be done with all of it. She could start as someone new, with a future and not a past. Avari would die - and she would move on without the baggage her name had carried with her. It was past time to let go of that.
Perhaps once she might have been hopeful about such a change, but now... it was just something to move towards. She had gotten tired of standing still. Maybe one day she might have worried about her lack of enthusiasm for a future, a different one. A different fate, maybe - if fate even existed.
She could no longer remember what it felt like, to fear. To worry. To hope. She knew it was her own fault, in a way, and she accepted it. It was better like this, made things easier - and it had been the only way to survive without trouble, back when she hadn't known what to do, what to believe. Besides, it was the way of the world for truth to be malleable. Everyone lied and hid from the truth - what she was doing was no different than everyone else.
She should have paid more attention to her surroundings than her nebulous goal - she ignored the sound of footsteps until someone brushed against her. It didn't have the force of a deliberate push, but she was momentarily off balance, and while she tried to keep from tripping fully or falling, she composed herself, turning to face the one who had bumped her with a look of surprise.
"Excuse me!"

"Excuse me!"
Oh, his heart. He hadn't even been sure he had one until this dark angel spoke in such a dulcet tone. The melodious sound of her voice caused his insides to start fluttering like little wings, the excitement he felt to know that he'd soon have this lifeless beautiful doll in his hands for him to play with... Gear did everything possible to hide himself gushing in the presence of such an exquisite being. The lies he was so eager to hear so thick against her tongue... oh so many, many things he wanted to do - and yet did not know what to do. His first instinct was to get her far and away from this crowd of people, just so that they may have one on one time. "Hehe..you're more polite than I had expected..." It all started with a chuckle and his arms laced around the girl's smaller form as he leaned a bit close to her and gripped her wrists. All of the sudden, a cold gale of wind rushed up beneath the two as if a pair of wings had suddenly come unfurled. The man's knees bent just slightly as he leapt then took off into the air with Avari held closely to him. As romantic as this scene could have been thought of by those unfortunate enough to witness it, it would be anything but.
"Is that just a ruse, too?!"
After leaping about ten stories into the air, Gear glided onto the roof - his wings invisible to the human eye but obviously there. Each time they began losing elevation, another strong gust of wind and the sound of the stroke of wings kept them airborne. He was sure to take extra care not to bruise the girl so early and set her down, taking a leap backwards as if he were certain she wasn't going to be too happy about this.
"Hello, hello! You must be that delicious little human that I kept smelling on the streets! Let me just say, it's an honor to finally meet you. My name is Gear." Once he felt he was a respectable distance away, the man took a step backwards and offered Avari a sweeping bow, only to glance back up at her from beneath his mess of hair and flashed her a toothy grin. "Forgive me for plucking you up like that.. but I felt that we were in need of more privacy for such a special meeting!"
Special meeting indeed. The motive behind Gear's methods of whisking her away like that was not yet clear...
Hell, no one would know if even he knew himself.

She had no chance to react. She barely even got a good look at the one who had bumped her before he leaned in close, the proximity her only warning as her wrists were held in a tight grip. Of course, she tried to jerk away - someone was touching her, this was far too close - but there was no chance to escape.
The sudden draft made her blink, and then they were flying, her captor seemingly moving through the air without the aid of wings, or anything else. Avari could barely think - a part of her was bitterly resenting how visible this stunt was, that people had noticed, but it was night and if she changed her clothes likely no one would pin her as the girl who had suddenly flown to the top of a building.
As for him... he had expected her. He knew something, and had planned this and she had no idea who he was to already know so much. It was the fear that he knew her that kept her from doing anything supremely foolish like trying to struggle out of his grip when they were still in the air. She couldn't help the flinch as he asked if it was a ruse - he knew he knew and she had no way to hide -
And then they had landed on the roof of a building, and he released her, leaping back as if he expected her to rush at him. For a moment, she stared blankly, and then took a few steps back, intent on maximizing the distance between them. She had definitely heard the sound of wings beating, and felt the change in his movement - he had wings, but she couldn't see them. Or maybe she was hallucinating, but she hadn't had that sort of luck in a long time.
She might not have noticed him, if not for... the abduction, though his colouring made it clear he wasn't Japanese. He was pale, with extremely light hair - he looked stereotypically angelic, if not for his eyes. when he finished his introduction and glanced up at her, she had to forcibly keep herself from shuddering. His eyes were red. If his appearance unnerved her, his words did nothing to put her at ease. It was much harder at this time to sink into the lie and block out her panic, but she managed. Even if he did know about her... talent, she wasn't about to face him without some sort of shield.
"I don't understand," she murmured. "You've been... following me? You smelled me?" Surprise, confusion and a quaver of fear - even to herself she sounded helpless. She already felt calmer, her fright and panic brought to the surface and distilled. It wasn't that she was afraid, but Shion was. Shion didn't exist, so she wasn't really afraid at all. As she felt it, she used it - and then banished it.
And then there was nothing left, and no weakness for her captor to exploit.

Hehe…not afraid?
Gear wasn’t sure if it was courage, stupidity, or whatever it was. She didn’t scream, she didn’t run, she didn’t question who he was in the desperate voice he had been expecting from her. There was absolutely no surprise at the fact he could fly…all that she questioned was that if he had been following her. The man’s hidden eyes went a bit wide as his grin somehow grew twice as big, the space between them suddenly closed as his hidden wings curled behind her back and pulled her to his chest, glancing down at her with an unreadable and hungry expression while he had her in his clutches – despite the fact his arms were still at his side.
”You asked the wrong question that time, cher.” he cheerfully informed her, reaching out to lace his fingers between hers and bring her hands up above her head to stretch her arms out and pull her closer to his face. ”But I’ll answer for you regardless. Yes~I did smell you. I am not human, but you should already know that…”
A growl rumbled in his throat and his serene expression had twisted into a snarl. ”You are so beautiful.” he hissed at her with his icy breath seething through his teeth. While it was a genuine compliment, there was nothing but a cold hatred rooted in these words. ”Such a shame. Such a waste.”
Let’s see…where to start? God, she was so delicate. He didn’t even want to bruise her or break any bones yet. The girl would break far too easily and all the fun would be taken out of it… hmm… didn’t want to see her hurt quite yet. Maybe… for now he wanted to see her squirm, like an ant under a magnifying glass. Yes, that’s exactly what he wanted her to do. She was his little experiment now.
He felt his hidden tail lash in anticipation behind him, trying to read her expression blindly. ”… Tell me. What’s going through your tasty little mind? What do you think I’m going to do to you?”

This... was not working. She had intended to find out his goals, if she could - but he surprised her by suddenly pulling her closer, without any apparent means of doing so. She certainly felt something shove at her, though, and the fact that she couldn't see what was pinning her to his chest unnerved her. Her mask faltered, even as he imprisoned her arms and drew her closer.
No chance of escaping, and her first attempt to lie had been rather disastrous. The wrong question - what did that mean? Too obvious? She could have only asked what a normal, frightened girl would ask - but it had been a lie anyways. She couldn't really align herself with the former, and somehow, he knew that.
But she couldn't just stop - but if she didn't, maybe he would kill her.
She might not have known what she wanted, but she knew that she didn't want to die just yet.
She might have wavered on the edge of a decision if not for her captor, whose previously benign expression morphed into something far more primal and brutal. She did her best not to flinch away, but the jerk of her muscles was noticeable, even as she tried to keep as still as possible. The words he hissed were unnerving in such a tone, and with that kind of look accompanying them, and her suspicions as to his motives were quickly being confirmed.
She felt like she was getting mental whiplash - he had introduced himself cordially, threatened her and now... wanted to know what she thought. Her first instinct was to try and take on an act again, but she couldn't. He was scaring her. He had threatened her. He was moving her about on his whims like a doll, and all of it seemed calculated just to terrify her.
Why bother to lie when it would be no different than the truth?
"That you're going to kill me," Avari answered - properly, as herself. Compared to 'Shion', her voice was flat - there was a tinge of fear present, but she didn't tremble or stutter. "Harm me, at least. That you'll enjoy doing it. Since you're not human... maybe eat me." She was terrified, but she couldn't express it properly. It had been growing more difficult, if she felt something, to show it since... she had lost her memory, but it had never struck her as dissonant.
At least, until now.
"What makes me so special, that you picked me out?"

"That you're going to kill me...Harm me, at least. That you'll enjoy doing it. Since you're not human... maybe eat me."
Ahhh...
Perceptive child. It almost made him not want to do anything of that nature to her - just to be defiant. However, he knew that he wasn't going to let her go unscathed. His claws lightly brushed up against her wrists, tempted to slice his nails through her delicate veins but not doing so. Instead, his entire demeanor changed to one that became far more gentle and human, his expression and smile softening some to one less...animalistic.
"What makes me so special, that you picked me out?"
Gear giggled a bit, not unlike a giddy child would. His grip around her wrists softened as his madness was slowly stored away for now. The boy leaned forward, craning his neck so that his lips hovered ever so slightly over hers. Deciding to fake her out he grinned widely at her, happily pressing his teeth against her soft lips in a pecking motion and pulling away quickly to then move his mouth near her ear. "I won't lie to you..." he whispered gently to her, his tone almost sounding affectionate.
"You have a darkness in your soul... like mine... I think you're unique."
Gear didn't take the liberty to say she WAS unique, hell... all she was was as significant as a grain of sand to the rest of the world. But to him, she was a rare gem. All this mush was getting to him and he rested his cheek on her shoulder while smiling up at her. "There are many things I want to do to you..." he admitted as if it were actually something romantic to say.
"But I think out of all of them, I'd love to get your name~"

Again, the whiplash; Gear went from terrifyingly animalistic to almost angelic in appearance again, smiling at her with a deceptive gentleness. Even if he hadn't outright threatened her, and was currently terrifying regardless of his expression, she wouldn't have trusted such a smile. She was a liar, after all - she knew all too well that a kind smile was just the easiest way to have someone underestimate you. On her captor, though, such a sudden change only deepened her fear of him. She could feel that terror, and she couldn't quite stifle her own reactions when he moved closer as if to kiss her, body tensing and shuddering.
She wondered how much he enjoyed watching her freeze up, because the kiss was barely even that - a second of contact before he moved to her ear, cold breath hissing as he spoke.
Even if he hadn't specifically chosen his words to hurt, she winced. Did he resent her attempt to lie to him? It had not been out of spite, she did it to everyone... She had never deluded herself into thinking she was a particularly good person, but it had never been to purposefully harm. Well, not all of the time. It had just made things easier for her. For someone like him to think they were similar....
She could think of nothing to say to that.
She swallowed as he rested his head on her shoulder, a deliberate parody of something more affectionate. She had never let anyone get this close to her. The physical contact just by itself would have been unnerving, but combined with everything else... she hated it. Of course, he probably knew that, and was exploiting that weakness - if she hadn't been the target, she might have been impressed by how calculated his approach was to disturb his target. His croon might have been more fitting from a lover, but there was no mistaking his meaning.
"My name is..." No choice to lie, not when he was right there and for once it would only make things worse -
She felt like something should have been shattering, all her careful defences and acts torn away. There was nothing to hide who she was. She felt cold.
"Avari."

"My name is..."
"Avari."
And there it was, the ever-so-subtle sign. He swore he could see the blood drain from her face, making her even more beautifully pale than she had been before. Gear removed his head from her shoulder to flash her another toothy grin, but this time let it fade into something a bit more gentle. He did that - fluctuate between the monster he really was and this romantic persona. Had he really meant it? Well... Gear wasn't exactly sure why but he suddenly hadn't really felt like tearing her apart anymore. No, he was a little too curious about this one.
Why was it that admitting her name was so difficult? Her voice was so cold and hollow like there was nothing inside. Just a shell... he took this as a silent challenge. He wanted to find this girl's heart, wherever it was, and see just how juicy and tainted it had been. His eyes searched hers, crimson and animal-like peering through his deceiving, angelic blonde hair. He cooed softly after a few moments of silence, releasing her wrist to delicately take her chin. "Avari..." he repeated softly, letting his reptilian tongue slide out his mouth and run along her cheek briefly all while keeping eye-contact. He wanted to see her fear, disgust, something...
Huh. Suddenly imagining several expressions on her face that showed fear or hatred... It... didn't look good on her. The boy's expression darkened somewhat, hidden wings pulling her even closer so her body finally met his. He was cold. "Hmmm~sweet Avari. I do think I'm rather fond of you~" As he said this, his eyes underwent a frightening change. The darks of them slit to appear snake-like. "I just knew the moment I sensed your presence that there was something precious about you... I think you're misunderstood. I think you really are. Just like me."
Then his eyes rolled upward in faux sadness, pouting his lip some as he began to whine. "It pains me that our kind are so different... but..." his eyes shot down back to her, his expression changing once again. "I don't really care about any of that." And with that, his wings wrapped tightly around her and pulled her upwards so her lips would barely be touching his.
"What are you thinking, now~?"

It had been... a long time since anyone significant had known her name, let alone called her by it. In a way, that was far more disturbing than his gentle smile or the way he licked her cheek. Those she could... not ignore, but accept without thinking too much about them. Just attempts to unnerve her, and though they worked, she could deal with it.
But her name....
She stared at him, throat dry and suddenly incapable of saying anything. And he kept saying it as he pulled her close - her shiver was not just at how cold his body was as he forced her into even closer contact, but the sound of her name repeated in his voice. He said it as if it meant something, and it terrified her. He knew her now, knew her name, knew enough to think that she was... corrupted in some way. Because of Gear, she would never cease to exist.
The thought of him remembering her - he was enjoying it too much to just forget, after he was done - hurt. She had done this so well, for so long - and now a nonhuman stalker who could fly had ruined her pitiful attempt for a life and a future. She hadn't even known what she had wanted, but her chance of forgetting herself and finding something new was gone all the same.
He had continued talking, and she of course had no choice but to listen, unwillingly pulled closer by his invisible wings. The way he was talking, it would have been easy to assume he had an interest in her outside of someone to torment - but that didn't make her feel any better. Worse, probably, as he pulled her up so that their lips touched. He was... much colder than a human, and she would have pulled away if it would have done her any good.
"You scare me," she said softly. "That's what you want, isn't it? And..." In this position, she could hardly look away, and her even quieter murmur still felt like a betrayal. "You know who I am now."

So he scared her did he? While most of the time this would have brought him pleasure... when this would have made him feel victorious and dominant... Gear felt strangely... offended. This, of course, could not be kept under his loose lips as he let the truth escape its weakly-guarded prison. "I thought it was~" he admitted, letting out a soft breath in her face. It had no scent, only an icy chill. "But...now that I think about it..."
The beast took his time to muse, to prolong his prey's confusion and fear. As much shame as any other of his kind would have felt for letting his secrets spill to this human, he didn't care. He couldn't care. That what was so beautifully different between him and his beloved Avari. "I'm thinking of something far more interesting..."
And with that, he released her from every grasp. The illusory wings lifted up and over his own head as their presence and heaviness seemed to vanish. Gear happily took back his entirely human form... but no matter how hard he'd try to be human that chilly air around him would always be there. The man strode forward, hoping that Avari would keep still as he lifted his hand to gently capture a lock of her hair while keeping his hidden eyes on her. "Instead of killing you or subjecting you to a parasite that'd drain your negative energy for my superiors... I have something far more fun to do with you!"
Gear's free hand dove into his front pocket, feeling around for something and then removing his own replica digivice. With that, he extended his hand outwards to her, presenting her with the choice to take it. Though it was hard to see, each hair on his fake body was standing on end in excitement and as a silent threat. A low hiss slid through his bared teeth, along with a menacing giggle that he couldn't bite back. "I want you to take this..." he explained lowly, his disposition shifting from relaxed to threatening. The roof was suddenly swept with a freezing gale, as if he was having trouble hiding his anticipation and the anger that would follow if she were to reject it.
"...and become my partner."

He didn't want just her fear?
Was he saying that to confuse her, or genuinely telling the truth? Not that she would often suspect other people of being sincere, but he went through no risks if he told her anything. She wanted to forget all of this - and perhaps she would even deceive herself into ignoring him, ignoring what he had managed to do to her.
But ignorance did not a lie make, and she could only turn away from this truth for so long.
She had barely any time to contemplate what he might mean with "something interest" - it sounded ominous and she doubted it would benefit her - before he suddenly released her. The sudden absence of pressure keeping her pressed to him was a shock, and she had, in a way, become used to letting him do what he wanted that she didn't instantly back away. And then he was closer again, still radiating cold like a myth, hand possessively holding some of her hair.
She stood silent as he teased her with knowledge that she would not die. If those had been the two fates he had planned for her, then she doubted this one would be much better - and the feeling of hopelessness, that there would be no escape, only increased as he pulled out a Digivice and proclaimed his intention.
Avari's eyes widened in recognition and she almost pulled away before she remembered just how easily he had brought her here in the first place. She could refuse, but if she did...
But this felt wrong. Even considering it felt as if he was whispering her name over and over and over - a betrayal, something breaking in the distance and its echoes overwhelming her. She most certainly did not want to consider accepting it, let alone actually do so -
But she wanted this to end.
But she wanted to live.
If she accepted, she would never be able to forget anything, never be able to hide or lie again - at least, not to him. True death and a life she abhorred - there was no way to choose between that, not properly.
Her hand trembled as she reached out to accept it. "Alright," she whispered, and felt nothing as the glass of her shell - such a careful web of lies, half-truths and gaps in her words shielding her from the world - shattered.

He watched... He watched and he waited.
Gear had been waiting for a moment like this for many years. The proverbial deflowering and corruption of his untouched replica digivice and of a worthy candidate...someone that appeared so beautiful and innocent but wasn't. He hadn't even shown the slightest interest in others becoming his partner before... but this girl...this gift from saints that had been literally set in front of him... Gear knew that with all what was left of his wounded heart that he could use this girl and that she'd happily use him, too.
Maybe she... maybe this one could pick up where his beloved Grace left him. Maybe he could come to love her as much as he did Grace. Maybe, maybe she could fill that void... that emptiness that ate at him... the emptiness that couldn't be sustained by torturing these fragile pitiful little humans.
But that moment... the moment that Avari's fair skin brushed against the device that'd bind them forever...
It sizzled.
It cracked.
It shocked him.
It rejected him.
And the only reason he could think of why was...
this girl...
this girl who he had grown so quickly to love and adore...
she already had a digimon.
"you..."
"YOU FUCKING LITTLE SLUT!!!"
There it was. The monster's voice being kept under lock and key had broken from its prison. The moment Gear lost grip of the digivice due to the stinging shock it sent him the air went deathly cold. Unable to hide his beastly form much longer from her the man suddenly took the shape of a towering white demon after being engulfed in a strange light.
Gear wasted no time as he reached out to grip around her delicate body with crushing force. Despite this, he was sure to be careful not to break any of her bones while in his grasp. In one swift motion he held her up to his face... his jaws bound by their holy shackles that caused his voice to sound as if it had been infiltrating her mind as opposed to through his fangs.
"Didn't your mummy and daddy ever tell you it's FOOLISH TO LIE?" he demanded of her, shaking her body within his grasp like a frustrated child with a plaything. "I should teach you to suffer for it. I know...I'll tear out your tongue SO YOU CAN NEVER LIE TO ME AGAIN!!!"
Even if Avari had no idea what he had been talking about, he wouldn't let it go. He'd never forgive her for leading him on like that. No...she wouldn't win...she wouldn't get away with this. Avari had signed her soul away to him, and he wasn't one to break a contract under any circumstances.

Avari had expected something momentous to happen, something to signify just how great and foolish this choice was - and she was not disappointed. But its reaction was not something she wanted either, and she felt the chill left by Gear's touch sink deeper as the Digivice cracked, electricity surrounding it for a brief moment.
It hadn't worked.
For once, her actions mirrored his - staring at the Digivice in shock and disbelief. She expected him to be angry, and he certainly was - his shout rang in the air, making her flinch back because if all this before had been with him in a good mood...
And then the air turned harsh, taking her breath away with its sudden drop in temperature. With the cold came something she hadn't expected, Gear's form surrounded in light before fading to reveal a bestial gargoyle, angelic wings and features proved false by his fury. He reached out and grabbed her, claws curving in a vice grip that so carefully hovered above actually causing her pain. She had as little chance of getting away as before; less, even, as he was no longer doing this just to torment her.
She gasped as he shook her, voice hissing as if accusing her in her mind. She hung limply in his grasp, unable to catch her breath or figure out anything to say.
Was he truly going to hurt her? Render her mute? She couldn't lie like that, she had no idea how to shield herself if she couldn't talk. Everything she did was based on words, fragile puffs of air shaped with false intention, and if he took that away from her? But she hadn't lied - not as such. Lying by omission as not the same, and she hadn't tried to trick him. She hadn't known this would happen - but if she had refused then wouldn't she be in the same situation anyways?
Her thoughts swung in sickening circles, and she felt vaguely feverish as she forced out the truth. I didn't know it would do that," she protested, the weak protest like one last desperate attempt to survive.
"And my parents are dead," Avari told him, her thoughts returning to a circle of terror at what she was doing.
If she was going to die, then... it didn't really matter what she told him. She had sealed her fate already.
