What an interesting week it had been. Between the magnificent happening of her brothers finally moving out of the house to attend university and the strange appearance of her new little pink friend, Kiyoko was caught in the middle of a whirlwind of excitement. She still had no idea why Koromon was her partner. What made her so special? And what even was a Digimon anyway? Such questions clouded her mind, but for now she just decided that she was happy to have a new friend.
Kiyo had taken to bringing Koromon to school with her, tucking him into her backpack and pretending that he was a plush doll. The little round Digimon wasn't overly happy about that, but agreed anyway, wanting to stay close to his human. All he had to do was be quiet and still--usually he slept all day as Kiyoko attended her classes.
But it was always relieving when the school day was over, for both of them. Today Kiyoko had made the decision to stop by the food court for a snack on the way home. Amidst the crowd of people eating their food, Koromon easily went unnoticed as he sat in a chair next to his partner, happily scarfing down the food she offered him. Kiyo had no idea what Digimon were supposed to eat and whether or not human food was good for them, but so far nothing bad had happened to her new friend and so she figured everything would be all right.
"I wish I knew more about you," Kiyo said with a sigh, resting her cheek on her hand and leaning against the table.
"There's not much else to know, really," replied Koromon. "I told you, I'm your Digimon partner and I come from the Digital World." "I want to go to the Digital World someday," the girl said, thinking out loud. "What's it like?""Dangerous." Kiyo blinked. "There's all sorts of Digimon out there, and some of them will attack others. I don't think it would be a good idea for you to go there." That was another thing she liked about Koromon, he seemed to always want the best for her; she wasn't really sure how well he could protect her as a small pink ball with antennae, though. But there had to be someone else out there who knew about Digimon. She couldn't be the only one who had made such a mysterious friend.[/blockquote]

Gosh, she had become so hungry. Rarely did Koromon get to enjoy being an organic creature - her later forms usually consisted of machine-like beings that had no concept of hunger. But now it had been the first time in a long time that she'd be able to eat and she was sure to speak her mind about - despite being deathly afraid to do so. "M-mister Oswell...?" she inquired innocently, a soft blush appearing on her already-pink cheeks as she glanced up at her partner that held her like a stuffed animal.
While Oz's first instinct was to tell her to be quiet, he felt a light rumble in his hands. When he finally glanced down at his digimon he saw that she had turned beet-red. The poor things 'stomach' had rumbled so hard he had felt it through his fingers. "Hehe... ach du liebe zeit, Koromon." He muttered to her, surprised how friendly he was sounding at all. What was it about Koromon? Well, he found himself actually grateful that he hadn't had the nerve to delete her for data. "We'll get you some food."
After grabbing some snacks, the two seated themselves not too far from Kiyoko and her Koromon. Oswell took some of his french fries and fed them to Koromon who was resting his lap, before he noticed that she had been looking at the other digimon nearby. "Oz, I see a digimon!" she squeaked, forgetting to address him formally like she would have when she wasn't so surprised.
Unable to help herself, Koromon hopped out of his lap and started over to the table next to them. Oswell, of course, went rigid in fear to see his digimon bouncing away around other's busy feet on the disgusting ground. With wide eyes he traced over to see that his Koromon had hopped right up on the seat beside Kiyoko and her partner - beaming at them. "Ohmigosh! You're a person with a Koromon just like my partner!"
Koromon had no shame when it came to calling Oswell her 'partner.' Even though they were only bound by bits bought for her, she still found that he was growing on her. The digimon looked back and forth for a moment before turning back to smile up at Kiyoko, "You're so pretty!" she squeaked out. Probably an incredibly odd thing to hear from a digimon, but she had never seen a human girl before (thanks to Oswell being a complete hermit and having no friends...especially friends that were girls.)
"Sheiße KOROMON..." After pushing past the crowd, the boy quickly snatched up the digimon and bit back cursing at her until he met eyes with Kiyoko and the familiar pink blob seated in the chair beside her. "...Oh...ah..." the boy fumbled over himself, not wanting to make a horrible first impression with a girl that actually looked around his age and with a digimon. He stood there, dumbfounded and uncertain on how to even begin a conversation with her. So when he tried, the only thing to come out of his mouth was an awkward, garbled mess that was a cross between 'Hi' and 'I'm Oz.'
"...Hozz...?"

Before Kiyoko could ask just what kinds of dangers existed in the Digital World, wanting to satisfy her curiosity, she suddenly became aware of some sort of commotion nearby. Turning her head, she caught sight of a boy around her age who she had never seen before, and he appeared to be chasing after something. She definitely wasn't expecting that something to be another Koromon.
Kiyoko's eyes widened in surprise as the second pink round thing unexpectedly hopped up onto a chair beside her. "Wh...wha...?" she stuttered, looking from her own partner to this female one and back several times. When the female Digimon spoke, though, Kiyo focused on her. "You're another person with a Koromon just like my partner!" So there were others!
The girl blushed slightly at the compliment, muttering a brief "th-thanks," in response, still rather confused. The appearance of the second Digimon had startled her so much that she had momentarily forgotten about the boy who she saw earlier, evidently the partner of the female Koromon. He muttered something that she didn't understand before focusing his gaze on her; it seemed that he was as confused as she was.
"Oh, uhh, hi..." Kiyoko responded. "You...you have one too!" She nodded toward the pink blob in the boy's arms.
"Wow, I wasn't expecting to run into a female version of me," Koromon said, looking interested. "In fact, I didn't ever think I would see any other Digimon here in the human world..." Unlike his partner, Koromon at least managed to keep his cool. That was another thing Kiyoko had noticed about him: he never seemed surprised by anything. "So um...I'm Kiyoko," the girl said, figuring that some semblance of a topic might make the situation less awkward. "What do you know about these...Digimon?"[/blockquote]

"Uh-huh! We're not the only ones, either! There're a whole buncha digimon like us!" Koromon cooed to the familiar digimon, simply beaming at him and her partner. It was such a relief to meet someone so friendly! It was definitely a refreshing change from Oswell and his cold-hearted brother's attitude. Oswell, however, was not as thrilled as Koromon was in the presence of a girl. Why was this so difficult?!
When she had introduced herself, Oz realized that he had utterly failed with his own introduction. Fumbling over himself for a moment, he gave Koromon a quick and tight hug to himself. How would he recover from that?! 'Hozz'. Ugh. "O-Oswell...Oswell Faber...is my name.." he blurted out. Dammit, he was SO bad at this!
Oh crap. Now she was asking him what he knew about digimon? This girl sure hit the information goldmine. Unfortunately he knew the risk of sharing said info with non-A.I.R. members but...well perhaps being a little nice couldn't hurt. Besides it was probably the first time he ever met someone physically around his age that had a digimon, too. Maybe this would be his chance to start fitting in and having a social life.
"Er...Ah..."
Okay, that was a lot harder than he imagined it would be. Oswell looked down at Koromon pleadingly for help but his gaze suddenly snapped back up at Kiyoko and her partner as he tried to fabricate something that'd make it sound like he wasn't completely dense on the subject... but not give away he knew too much, either. "Well...szhey are digital monsters... und... szhey are made from Data... and szhey like to fight each ohzer..." he explained, his accent slipping through due to his nervousness.
Oswell felt his blood run cold at this thought, eyes narrowing when he noticed he was actually taking the two Koromon's feelings into consideration when explaining what digimon were. He was actually making them out to sound like living beings.
"Nothsing important... just little holograms that come out of szhe computer... und... just... destroy sings.... shey are not living... just... games. An advanced game."
Koromon blinked up at Oswell, her antennae drooping considerably. He really hadn't changed had he? But she noticed the considerable amount of hesitance and confusion in his voice. He really didn't believe that she was nothing but data...did he?
"Oz..."

The female Koromon seemed to possess boundless energy, talking excitedly about how there were lots of Digimon like them. So there must be a lot of people who were partnered with them, too, Kiyo thought. How strange. Why would some people get Digimon partners and others not? It all made her very confused.
The boy introduced himself as Oswell. Kiyoko noted his anxiety and this made her a bit nervous as well. She had never been particularly great at social interaction either. "It's, uh, nice to meet you, Oswell," she replied awkwardly, before listening to his description of Digimon. He had a strange accent, one which Kiyoko couldn't exactly place the location of in her mind, but she was pretty sure that she could make out what he was saying.
Digital monsters...made of data...not living...just games. Kiyoko stared at Oswell blankly for a moment, thinking over what he had said. The female Koromon didn't seem very happy with her partner's description. Kiyo looked over to her own Digimon and saw him frowning as well.
"They seem pretty alive to me," the girl replied, picking up her Koromon and placing him in her lap. "I don't think you can interact with a game." She gave Koromon a small squeeze. "They're just different from us, I guess." She tilted her head down to look at the pink blob that she was holding, as if asking him to back her up.
"We...are digital in nature, yes," Koromon said, "But I don't think that makes us any less alive or real. We can get hurt and die just like you can." Now it was Kiyoko's turn to frown; she didn't like the idea of her new friend being injured or dying. She decided to abruptly change the subject, seeing as the current one was not headed in a favorable direction.
"Oswell, what do you know about the Digital World?"

That disrespectful little idiot! Who did that child think he was, just wandering off!? And now, of course, he had to go looking for him, had to waste valuable minutes of his day to search for his delinquent nephew. That kid was gonna have to buy him a whole case of wine if he wanted to stay in Jenner's house! Tch, honestly, who was he kidding. He'd just find Oz and cuff him on the ear or whatever and that would be that. "Sheiße KOROMON..."...Oz. Oz was the only person who spoke German within a hundred miles. Not counting that ashtray brother of his. And the chances that he was here were next to nil. So it had to be Oz! Now where exactly had that voice come from? "Could you take me out of your freaking pocket, old man? It's stuffy in here!" ...oh yeah. He'd forgotten about Pagumon nestled into his business coat pocket, creating a small bulge. Jeez, when was the last time he'd even fed the thing? "Later, okay? And.. remind me to buy you some food. Oz'd flip if he knew I wasn't feeding you.""What do you know about these...Digimon?"The voice came from the same place Oz's had come. Why was his Oz talking to a girl? About the Digital World? Something was wrong, something was very wrong. Didn't Oswell know to never trust anyone with double-X chromosomes? Hadn't Jenner told the boy they were wily and cunning and to be avoided? Honestly he couldn't remember whether he had or not, but he'd just assume so. In all the years he'd known Oz he'd have been bound to share his point of view at one point, right?
He was finally able to spot the pair, shocked to see the double Koromons in plain view. How less careful could they two kids possibly be?! Pfft, children were so unreliable these days. Like he'd ever been reliable in his youth, but... that wasn't the matter at hand. Within a few seconds he'd waded through the crowd of people milling about and reached the pair. "I was wondering where you'd wandered off to, Oz! And who's this... fine young lady.. here?" He couldn't help but look at Kiyoko with distaste.

"We...are digital in nature, yes...but I don't think that makes us any less alive or real. We can get hurt and die just like you can."
Oz's expression suddenly hardened. He had heard this argument so many times... especially from his OWN Koromon. When he went to retort, he sucked in a little breath and ducked his head, keeping his thoughts to himself. Kiyoko seemed bent on changing the subject, anyway.
"I was wondering where you'd wandered off to, Oz! And who's this... fine young lady.. here?"
Oh. God. It was as if something from above, be it coincidence, karma, or some kind of other crap that saw that Oswell was actually so close...SO CLOSE to maybe befriending someone - that they had decided to sic WHO of all people on him?
His Uncle...Emerson Jenner. Hater of women and lover of alcohol. The embodiment of the word 'single' - and for good reason.
The boy's eyes rolled over to his Uncle, who he had slowly began realizing he looked nothing like. That man just had to continue bleaching all hell out of his hair... but Oswell couldn't find himself complain so long as he didn't look like his father. There was a moment or two where Oswell even thought that Jenner may have been doing this for Oz's sake... or that he really did enjoy looking like a flaming homosexual... a flaming homosexual... a... well there was really no sugarcoating it, was there?
It wasn't that Oswell hated his Uncle, if anything it was quite the opposite. It was just difficult to appreciate life at all when all it gives you as a source of affection is a sexist alcoholic. "Oh...hi...Uncle..." Oswell spoke through his thick embarrassment, eyes darting to his feet as a little blush started forming on his cheeks.
"Hi Mr. Jenner..." Koromon bowed her head in greeting at Oswell's uncle, feeling quite uncomfortable around him herself. The digimon's large, innocent red eyes searched Jenner's form to see the bulge in his jacket and frowned a bit - knowing it was Pagumon in there. Somehow, she wasn't surprised.
"She's..." Oswell wanted to snap 'no one' at his uncle but then he realized that especially since Kiyoko didn't understand their relationship he probably shouldn't. "...Ah...Kiyoko. My f---" Crap, he almost called her his friend. It was so hard to put up a ruse for both of their sakes - but it was suddenly so hard to be as brutally honest as usual. "...A girl...Kiyoko this is my Uncle... Emerson Jenner." he introduced him half-heartedly, obviously not looking pleased by his presence.
He made the realization that he couldn't bring up the digital world around her without looking like a traitor to A.I.R. Agh. Timing. It must have been fate or something stupid like that. "If he says anysing insulting to you...don't take it personally." he muttered to the girl, shooting his uncle a glare at this almost automatically. "Where ist Pagumon?"
Koromon beamed at Kiyoko and her partner. "He has a digimon too! But she was bought, just like me!"
The moment that those words left Koromon's lips, Oswell dropped his head to stare at his digimon absolutely dumbstruck. All the blood drained from his face and his eyes went as wide as they could go. "Koromon vhy vould you ever say that...?" He asked as if she had suddenly said the stupidest thing she could say. Which it was, Koromon had just revealed that digimon could be bought to a digidestined - jeopardizing A.I.R.'s secrets right then and there.
Poor Koromon couldn't understand why Oswell was looking at her and just blinked back him innocently... and suddenly very, very afraid.

It looked like Oswell had something else to say, but before he could even begin to speak, Kiyoko was surprised to see another man appear, one who was clearly familiar with the boy she was speaking to. Kiyoko didn't much like his tone of voice or the air about him. In fact, something about him made her downright anxious. Even Koromon narrowed his eyes a little at the stranger, apparently uncomfortable.
It turned out that this older man was Oswell's uncle. Even the boy and his Digimon seemed intimidated by Jenner. Oz introduced the two of them, and Kiyoko looked up to briefly meet Jenner's eyes. "It's...nice to meet you, Mr. Jenner," she replied, more out of courtesy than out of truthfulness. With a man like this, she couldn't risk forgetting her manners.
It turned out that this man had a Digimon of his own. Pagumon, it was apparently called. Kiyoko was curious to see the other types of Digimon that existed, and for a moment even got a little bit excited at the thought of meeting another one. That feeling quickly drained, however, when the female Koromon spoke up and said something unusual. But she was bought, just like me!
"Bought?" Kiyoko repeated. "What, do they have Digimon pet stores or something?" From Oswell's reaction, though, Kiyo imagined that the female Digimon meant something entirely different. She suddenly got the feeling that she had found out something she shouldn't have.
"What are you talking about?" Kiyoko's Koromon asked, his voice tense and slightly angry. "You can't...buy Digimon. What is this all about?"

"She's... ...Ah...Kiyoko. My f--- ...A girl...Kiyoko this is my Uncle... Emerson Jenner. [here, Oz had said a comment that Jenner chose to ignore out of the goodness of his heart]. Where ist Pagumon?"
Knew it, knew it, knew it. He scowled down at Oz, worst suspicions seemingly confirmed. The boy was stuttering, having trouble describing his new 'friend', and then tried to change the subject. How could he? Oh dear, this was certainly going to be a problem. How to deal with this particular situation? Perhaps he could--
"He has a digimon too! But she was bought, just like me!"
"Oh, now you've done it.." He muttered, quietly so only Oz would be able to hear. What the hell had he been thinking, letting that digimon of his talk so freely? He glanced down absently at the pocket bulge that was Pagumon, who was for once being quiet. Perhaps she knew better than to throw another wrench into an already wrecked situation.
There was one bight side to all of this, though--wrecked situations seemed to be something of Jenner's specialty. Had he not escaped countless times unharmed from his DNA-extracting excursions? Which reminded him. The girl that Oz had so readily befriended was a digidestined herself, was she not? He'd have to record her in his files and attempt to draw a sample.
"What are you talking about? You can't...buy Digimon. What is this all about?"
What was it all about? He couldn't tell the Koromon, less out of company policy and more out of himself not having a clue. All he did was track down digidestined and steal DNA, it wasn't his place to know the grand scheme! Except when it was, those rare occasions when he was trusted with some amount of knowledge. He didn't blame his superiors for not telling him much, seeing as he'd say anything for a good cask of wine.
"Hey, we're in a food court. Why don't we discuss this over something to eat?" Sure he was stalling and sure he was creating a way to take samples, but he was hungry. Hopefully he'd be able to lie his way through this conversation.

Well, this sucked. Once Oswell was finally starting to hope he would form a relationship that was somewhat healthy and normal he had discovered - much to his chagrin - that doing so would be impossible in the presence of Koromon or Jenner. His lips drew into a long frown as he glanced down at the accusatory Koromon that Kiyoko held. He could have easily said that his Koromon was delusional and that she had no idea what she was talking about...but what was the point? Why lie? He was so sick of lies coming from every direction of his life. Now the only choice he had was to spill everything there was to know about A.I.R. or walk away. And he sure as hell wasn't about to go with the first choice. With an elongated sigh, Oswell turned his back on the two and looked up at Jenner with 'that look.' It was that look that he so often shot at his uncle that silently said 'retreat.' It wasn't a very pleasant expression... it was one utterly laced with disappointment (probably something Jenner saw often in his nephew.) He couldn't bring himself to shout or even calmly scold his faux partner... which was... very strange to him. He had never been one to grant mercy to things that were deserving of punishment (in his mind.) Koromon was an exception... he couldn't see himself corner the poor pink creature as it stared up at him in fear. ...Wait, what? Why did he suddenly feel pity for Koromon? She was just a compilation of data! Just as he said earlier! Right? Maybe it was just because... she was HIS data now? Thinking about it too much was beginning to give him a headache and the boy shook his head free from the thoughts. With a nod to signal to Jenner that he was going to bail now, his gaze flicked upwards and then jolted into the crowd... being sure to dodge past the passersby to make sure he wouldnt' run into any of them. It was a shame that he had to leave so early in the conversation... but necessary. It was to protect A.I.R. - even though he didn't want much to do with them at all anymore. - E X I T -
